The crimson beacons of the Abyssal Meridian carried the armada across another five million light-years of uncharted intergalactic void.
When the two hundred star-dreadnoughts dropped out of fold-space, the dark coldness of deep space was swallowed by a violent, sulfurous glare.
Before them hovered the Crimson Veil of Ares—a colossal nebula burning with the furious light of three dying red supergiant stars, their solar coronas continuously bleeding into the void.
Suspended at the gravitational nexus of these three bleeding stars hung the second horror of the Nine Harbingers: the Abyssal Forge of the War-Maker.
It was a staggering, ringed megastructure spanning two thousand miles in diameter, forged entirely from black soul-iron and burning orichalcum.
Unlike the biological corruption of the Sovereign of Iron and Rot, this citadel was a monument to pure, industrialized slaughter.
Immense magnetic siphons plunged directly into the hearts of the three dying suns, drawing rivers of liquid stellar plasma into colossal planetary crucibles.
Along its miles of automated foundries, millions of colossal dreadnought hulls, siege-cannons, and mechanical warmongers were being stamped out in deafening, rhythmic clangs that sent seismic shockwaves through the ether.
On the central command bridge of the Sol-Invictus, the tactical hololith burned crimson under the barrage of heat telemetry.
"Surface temperatures on the forge ring exceed twenty thousand degrees," General Aurelius reported, his armored hand steadying himself against the console as the ship’s heat-shields hummed with heavy strain.
"The entire megastructure is shielded by a rotating magnetic deflection field powered by the three red giants. Conventional plasma broadsides will disperse harmlessly against the corona."
"Then we don't shoot the shield," Seraphina said, stepping closer to the tactical hololith.
Her white dragon-scale armor gleamed under the red stellar glare, her golden crescent mark glowing with bright, defiant heat at the base of her throat.
Her paramedic mind saw the forge not as an invincible fortress, but as a hyper-pressurized vascular system on the verge of an aneurysm.
"The three magnetic siphons are drawing millions of tons of superheated plasma every second. If we disrupt the magnetic containment coils at the base of the siphons, the plasma will backflow straight into the stellar crucibles."
"Inducing a catastrophic thermal blowout," Kaelen Vance finished, his deep baritone rumbling with dark, appreciative pride.
He stood at her side, his large, calloused hand coming to rest lightly over her hip, his thumb gently stroking the curve of her waist through her battle-corset.
His molten silver eyes were fixed on the heart of the ring, where a colossal, mountain-sized obsidian anvil sat crowned in white-hot fire.
"And while the crucibles detonate, the master of the forge will be forced to show himself: Vorgon, the War-Maker."
"Has his incubation pod opened?" Seraphina asked, looking up into his chiseled face.
"Seventy percent awakened," Kaelen replied, his silver eyes flashing with lethal anticipation.
"His psychic signature is already barking battle-hymns through the ether. He feeds on conflict, little sun. He will not cower behind walls once blood is spilled."
"Then let's give him a war," Seraphina said, her lips curving into a sharp, breathtaking smile.
Kaelen’s low laugh was pure, velvety menace.
He stepped closer, closing the distance until his armored chest pressed flush against her back, his arms coming around her waist to anchor her against his frame.
He bent his head, his mouth brushing the sensitive skin below her ear in a slow, searing caress that sent a shiver of pure heat straight to her core, defying the twenty-thousand-degree furnace burning outside the viewport.
"General Aurelius," Kaelen growled huskily, his gaze never leaving Seraphina’s lips as she tilted her head to meet his eyes.
"Deploy sixty Night-Reaver stealth cruisers. Have them target the magnetic stabilization nodes of the left and right siphons with anti-matter torpedoes. The Queen and I will take the central siphon ourselves."
"Understood, Grand Marshal!" Aurelius barked, snapping a salute before barking orders into the fleet comms.
Seraphina turned within Kaelen’s arms, her hands coming up to rest flat over his chest plate, feeling the heavy, steady thrum of his heartbeat.
"Ready to dive into a sea of fire, Vance?" she whispered teasingly, her amber eyes dancing with solar starlight.
Kaelen’s lips met hers in a fierce, breathless, deeply possessive kiss that tasted of iron, ozone, and unyielding devotion.
"With you, little sun... I would burn down the heavens."
He broke the kiss with a wicked grin, stepping back as their dual wings erupted—twenty feet of blinding starlight and eighty feet of midnight void.
Hand in hand, they vaulted from the forward launch bay, diving straight into the screaming, solar-fueled maw of the Abyssal Forge.
