The air inside the nursery turned rancid with the scent of oxidized copper, gangrene, and burning sulfur.
Standing thirty feet tall upon four multi-jointed legs of rusted adamantine, the Sovereign of Iron and Rot towered over the shattered central altar.
Its torso was a horrific fusion of rotting celestial flesh and scavenged starship bulkheads, bound together by thousands of squirming black biomechanical maggots.
Its head was an elongated iron skull, crowned with six glowing emerald optical sensors that burned with ancient, necrotic malice.
CLANG-WHIRRR.
The spinning titanium saw-blades within its hollow chest revved up to blinding speed, launching a gale of caustic green rot-acid across the gantry.
"Behind me!" Kaelen roared, his reflexes instantaneous.
He stepped directly into the path of the acidic deluge, his eighty-foot shadow-wings wrapping around them both like an obsidian vault.
The corrosive acid hissed and splattered violently against the dark-matter feathers, eating into the outer edge of his wings with sickening pops of dark smoke.
Kaelen grunted, his jaw locking tight as the phantom pain of his scorched wings flared through his nerves, but his boots remained cemented into the iron deck.
"Kaelen!" Seraphina gasped, her hand coming to rest flat over his chest plate, feeling the thunderous, protective rage thrumming through his heart.
"I am fine, little sun," he rumbled through clenched teeth, his molten silver eyes flashing with murderous, sovereign wrath.
"The creature is unstable. Severing those tendrils starved its primary cooling manifold. Its chest core is burning itself alive from within."
Seraphina’s clinical eye snapped to the glowing fissures along the monster's iron ribcage.
He's right.
The amputation had worked, even if it hadn't stopped the premature birth.
Without the amniotic coolant from the eight tendrils, the creature’s synthetic heart was running at twelve thousand degrees, threatening a localized meltdown.
"It has no armor over the ventral heat-exhaust behind its neck," Seraphina said, her voice dropping into cold, lethal command.
"If we pin its forelegs, I can vault above its shoulders and drive the Scepter straight down into the manifold!"
"Then let us break its legs," Kaelen snarled.
He dropped his shadow-wings, breaking the defensive dome in an explosion of violet lightning.
The High Sovereign charged across the slick gantry like an apex predator, Gloom-Weaver raised in a two-handed grip.
The Sovereign of Iron and Rot lashed out with a massive, three-bladed iron claw, moving with terrifying, unnatural speed that shattered the gantry beneath Kaelen’s boots.
Kaelen didn't dodge.
Activating the Obsidian Ring of the Void-Consort, he anchored his own mass, taking the blow directly against his broadsword.
The impact sent a deafening metallic clang ringing through the chamber, but Kaelen held firm, his muscles straining against the titan's strength.
With a savage roar, he twisted the blade, wedging Gloom-Weaver between the joints of the creature’s right foreleg and releasing a burst of point-blank gravity repulsion.
CRACK.
The massive adamantine limb snapped backward with a sickening screech of twisted hydraulics, forcing the titan down onto one knee.
"Seraphina! Now!" Kaelen’s command echoed off the bone stalactites.
Seraphina was already in motion.
Her twenty-foot wings of starlight flared to life, launching her fifty feet into the air.
She soared over the thrashing abomination, dodging a spray of necrotic spikes fired from its dorsal carapace with a tight, graceful barrel-roll.
She drew the Scepter of the Astral Sovereign with both hands, channeling every drop of her Sunblood, fusing the Egyptian solar fury of the Solar Dynamo of Ra with the storm-rage of the Heart of Susanoo.
The Scepter’s rotating miniature nebula turned white-hot, humming at a frequency that shattered the surrounding amber pods.
As she plummeted from the ceiling, Seraphina brought the blazing scepter down like the spear of an archangel, driving the tip straight through the exposed ventral exhaust behind the monster’s iron skull.
THUMP-CRUNCH.
The orichalcum shaft penetrated deep into the central fusion manifold.
"By the light of the First Dawn..." Seraphina whispered fiercely, her amber eyes blazing with holy fire, "...I pronounce you dead."
She detonated the solar charge.
Ten thousand degrees of pure, unfiltered starlight erupted inside the creature’s chest cavity.
The spinning saw-blades melted in an instant, dripping away as molten slag as the thermonuclear dawn incinerated the biomechanical maggots, the rotting flesh, and the rusted starship bulkheads from the inside out.
The Sovereign of Iron and Rot let out one final, gargantuan screech of agony.
Its six green optical sensors shattered into sparks, and its thirty-foot frame collapsed forward onto the ruined gantry, smoking and lifeless.
Seraphina vaulted off the falling carcass, landing lightly on her feet amidst the rising steam.
Before her breath could steady, a pair of strong, armored arms swept around her waist from behind, lifting her off her feet and pulling her flush against a trembling, blood-warm chest.
Kaelen buried his face in her neck, inhaling her clean scent of cedar and dawn starlight, his deep, ragged breaths washing over her collarbone.
"You magnificent, lethal creature," Kaelen growled huskily, his hands gripping her hips with possessive, desperate hunger.
"My Queen of the Sun... my heart."
Seraphina dropped the smoking Scepter, turning in his embrace to wrap her arms around his broad shoulders.
She kissed him deeply, tasting the coppery tang of battle on his lips, her body melting into the unyielding heat of his frame.
When they finally broke apart, their eyes locked in fierce triumph.
The first of the Nine Harbingers had fallen.
Eight remained—and the universe was beginning to learn that the Dawn and the Night were coming to conquer the dark.
