The fold-jump into the Abyssal Meridian was unlike any transit Seraphina had ever experienced.
Standard etheric fold-space was a tunnel of streaking azure starlight, but this ancient intergalactic hyper-lane felt like swimming through a subterranean river of crushed amethysts and liquid obsidian.
Outside the three-story diamond-glass viewport of the Sol-Invictus, the cosmic void was pitch-black, entirely devoid of background galaxies.
Only the narrow corridor of the Meridian glowed, illuminated by the crimson beacons left behind by ancient cosmic entities ten million years ago.
The two hundred star-dreadnoughts of the armada flew in tight arrowhead formation, their interlocking deflector fields creating a unified tunnel of golden starlight through the crushing dark.
On the central command bridge, Seraphina stood beside Kaelen at the primary navigational hololith.
Her white dragon-scale armor cast a gentle, warm luminescence across the tactical consoles, her golden crescent mark humming with low, rhythmic pulses at her throat.
Beside her, Kaelen’s presence was a steady, unyielding anchor of midnight heat.
His hand rested lightly at the small of her back, his long fingers casually tracing the curvature of her spine through the fine mesh of her imperial battle-corset.
"Transit velocity holding at eight million light-years per hour," the navigational officer reported, his hands gliding over the crystalline interface.
"The stabilizing field of the Scepter is dampening the intergalactic shear forces. We are currently two million light-years beyond the Milky Way’s halo."
"Any sign of pursuit or interception?" Seraphina asked, her amber eyes scanning the tactical display with calm, diagnostic scrutiny.
"Negative, High Queen," General Aurelius replied from the comm-station.
"The corridor is eerily vacant. No energy signatures, no patrol craft. It’s as though this entire sector of the universe has been scrubbed clean of life."
"It hasn't been scrubbed," Kaelen rumbled quietly, his deep baritone cutting through the hum of the bridge engines.
He leaned in closer to Seraphina, his warm breath stirring the dark tendrils of hair at her temple, sending a delicious, familiar shiver down her neck.
His molten silver eyes narrowed at the perimeter sensors.
"The life here was harvested, little sun. When the Nine Harbingers ruled this cluster, they didn't just conquer civilizations. They consumed their stellar cores and converted their biological biomass into biomechanical iron."
"Like a cosmic necrotizing fasciitis," Seraphina murmured, her trauma medic instincts framing the horror in clinical terms.
"An infection that spreads by rotting the host tissue from within."
"Precisely," Kaelen agreed, his thumb gently stroking her hip with possessive reassurance.
Suddenly, the crimson beacons of the Meridian began to flicker violently.
Warning. Gravitational anomaly detected.
The ship's automated AI chimed with calm, mechanical urgency as the deck shuddered beneath their boots.
Ahead of the fleet, the smooth crimson walls of the hyper-lane were warping, pinched inward by an immense gravitational disruption.
"Dropping out of slipstream!" the helmsman shouted.
With a concussive boom that rippled across the two hundred hulls, the armada was violently expelled from the Abyssal Meridian into sub-light real-space.
The sight that greeted them outside the viewport froze the breath in their throats.
They were drifting in the center of an apocalyptic cosmic graveyard: the Sargasso of Dead Suns.
Floating in the freezing dark were dozens of shattered Dyson spheres, hollowed-out ring-worlds, and hundreds of ancient, dead capital ships drifting like frozen iron ghosts.
And in the center of the graveyard, anchored to the crushed core of an iron planetoid, was an active, five-hundred-mile biological processing station.
The station was covered in writhing, oily black tendrils, pulsing with sickening, bilious green light.
And directly above it, a massive holographic iris blinked open, projecting the mechanical, grinding voice of the first waking horror:
"Welcome to the nursery of the new flesh, children of the dying dawn... The Sovereign of Iron and Rot has opened its eyes."
Seraphina straightened, her hand dropping to the pommel of her Scepter, her amber eyes blazing with sovereign fire.
Beside her, Kaelen’s shadow-wings flared into the air, a lethal, wicked grin spreading across his handsome face.
"Then let us introduce it," Kaelen purred darkly, "to the executioners."
