With the thermonuclear destruction ofJormungandr-Null, the toxic violet gases of Tartarus were swept away like morning mist before a rising sun.
The fifty super-dreadnoughts of the Gilded Wing regrouped around theSol-Invictus, their golden falcon hulls reflecting the newly cleared void.
Yet as the stellar dust settled, the sight waiting at the exact center of the shattered nebula filled the command bridge with profound, freezing dread.
Hovering in the gravitational dead-zone was theCitadel of the Black Abyss.
It was a celestial nightmare carved not from metal, but from the petrified corpses of an entire galaxy's dead gods.
Spanning fifty leagues across, the fortress was an inverted, spiraling spire of weeping black bone and compressed dark-matter that plunged downward toward a swirling, supermassive black hole—theEye of Tartarus.
Orbiting the perimeter were hundreds of spiked bone-bastions, each tethered to the main citadel by massive, pulsing arteries of liquid anti-matter.
At the very apex of the inverted spire stood thePalace of the Weeping Mirror.
There, waiting upon an open terrace of black soul-glass that jutted directly over the event horizon of the black hole, sat theVoid-Motherupon her throne of collapsed stars.
Her weeping mirror mask was turned upward toward the approaching solar armada, her lips curved into a cold, mocking smile that echoed psychically across every vessel in the fleet.
"The World-Eater was merely a beast, little monarchs," her chilling voice whispered through their skulls, dripping with ancient venom.
"Its death frees its gravity to feed my true throne. Come to the edge of the abyss, Seraphina. Let us see if your little sun can shine when the universe swallows light itself."
On the bridge of theSol-Invictus, Seraphina stood at the forward tactical hololith, her white dragon-scale armor humming with starlight.
TheScepter of the Astral Sovereignwas in her right hand, its miniature nebula spinning with sharp, erratic pulses as it fought the immense gravitational pull of the black hole.
Beside her, Kaelen Vance’s hand rested heavily upon her waist, grounding her against the psychic onslaught.
His molten silver eyes burned with lethal, unyielding focus, theObsidian Ring of the Void-Consortcrackling with black lightning as it fed directly upon the ambient dark-matter of the citadel.
"The fleet cannot enter the five-league perimeter," Kaelen rumbled quietly, his deep baritone carrying only to her.
"The tidal forces near the event horizon will shear the dreadnoughts’ hulls in two. If we take the citadel, we must do it alone... on foot."
"A surgical strike," Seraphina said, turning in his embrace to face him.
Her amber eyes were clear, steady, and filled with the ruthless resolve of a paramedic who had faced death a thousand times and refused to yield.
"We board the apex terrace directly. We shatter her weeping mirror, sever the anti-matter arteries feeding the black hole, and seal the Eye of Tartarus forever."
"And if she tries to drag us into the event horizon?" Kaelen murmured, a slow, predatory smirk curving his lips as his fingers tightened possessively against the curve of her hip.
"Then we make sure she goes in first," Seraphina answered with a sharp, breathless grin.
Kaelen’s low chuckle was a dark, vibrating rumble against her chest.
He leaned down, cupping the back of her neck with his gauntleted hand, pulling her mouth to his in a fierce, searing kiss that tasted of iron, adrenaline, and eternal devotion.
Every nerve in her body ignited, the heat of their mate-bond pushing back the crushing, freezing gravity of the black hole outside.
When their lips parted, they were both breathing heavily, their eyes locked in complete, sovereign unison.
"Aurelius!" Kaelen barked, turning to the general.
"Form a blockade perimeter at six leagues! Fire full long-range broadsides at the tethered bastions to disrupt their anti-matter flow! The Queen and I are taking the throne room!"
"For the Dawn and the Night!" Aurelius roared, slamming his fist to his breastplate.
Seraphina and Kaelen turned to the open launch bay, their twenty-foot wings of starlight and eighty-foot shadow-wings bursting open simultaneously.
Hand in hand, they leaped from the flagship into the freezing void, diving like a binary meteor toward the black throne of Tartarus.
