The Sol-Invictus plummeted through the upper stratosphere of the ring-world like an incandescent meteor of gold and white fire.
Flanking the five-mile flagship, the forty-nine super-dreadnoughts of the Gilded Wing fanned out into a descending wedge, their interlocking solar sails shearing through the turquoise cloud banks at Mach twenty.
Beneath them, the burning expanse of Aurelia opened in horrific, breathtaking detail.
The Sun-Emperor’s Citadel—a soaring archipelago of white orichalcum spires and hanging gardens suspended above an inland turquoise sea—was encircled by twenty colossal Abyssal Siege Bastions.
Each bastion was an irregular, jagged asteroid of weeping obsidian iron, chained together by pulsing conduits of corrupting anti-matter.
From their dorsal weapon-batteries, rivers of black flame pounded the flickering golden planetary shield, sending deafening thunderclaps rolling across the burning seas below.
Within the citadel, millions of civilians and wounded solar soldiers watched the sky with hollow despair, waiting for the final collapse of their ancestral shields.
Then, the clouds tore open.
The war-horns of the First Dawn—carved from ancient dragon bone and amplified through etheric resonators—sounded across the heavens.
The low, resonant chord shook the foundations of the siege bastions.
"Target the primary anchor-chains of the forward three bastions!" Seraphina commanded from the bridge of the Sol-Invictus.
Her white dragon-scale armor gleamed under the triple suns, her twenty-foot wings of starlight flaring to their full, blinding glory.
Her amber eyes were ablaze with the combined fury of the Solar Dynamo of Raand the Heart of Susanoo.
"Aurelius, full port-side broadside! Scatter their firing lines!"
"With blood and dawn, High Queen!" the general roared back.
The fifty super-dreadnoughts opened fire in sweeping, synchronized volleys.
Fifty thousand golden plasma lances carved through the atmosphere, striking the tethered bastions with the kinetic fury of a falling moon.
The anti-matter anchor-chains shattered like cheap glass, sending three of the multi-mile obsidian fortresses tumbling out of orbit, burning up in the dense lower atmosphere before crashing into the sea in towering geysers of steam and fire.
"Enemy flagship detected!" the tactical officer called out.
From behind the burning smoke of the destroyed bastions rose a gargantuan, spider-like leviathan: the Gorgon of the Abyss.
Commanded by High Matron Vorash, the dreadnought was covered in thousands of writhing, bladed tentacles that were already firing hyper-velocity barbed harpoons straight at the Sol-Invictus.
"Brace for evasive thrust!" Aurelius shouted.
"No," Kaelen Vance’s voice cut through the alarm with chilled, predatory finality.
The High Sovereign stepped onto the open dorsal gantry, stepping directly into the roaring atmospheric slipstream.
His eighty-foot shadow-wings snapped wide, his molten silver eyes locking onto the incoming salvo of barbed harpoons.
He didn't just summon a shield; he tapped into the primordial gravity of the Night Court, tearing a five-mile localized singularity across the open sky in front of their bow.
The incoming barrage of harpoons was violently sucked into the spinning vortex, crushed into a dense ball of twisted scrap iron before being spat back out into the Gorgon's forward weapon-deck with devastating kinetic velocity.
Explosions rippled across the enemy leviathan’s hull, momentarily crippling its primary cannons.
"Now, Seraphina!" Kaelen roared, his arm reaching out to catch her as she leaped onto the gantry beside him.
She didn't need words.
Their fingers laced together in an unbroken, sovereign bond of fire and void.
Seraphina drew her sunstone recurve bow with her free hand, resting the golden riser across Kaelen’s armored shoulder.
Together, they poured their dual essence into a single, colossal arrow of compressed starlight and gravity-matter—an apocalyptic spear of the Dual Eclipse.
TWANG.
The arrow streaked across the three leagues of open sky, leaving a vacuum wake that parted the turquoise clouds for fifty miles.
It struck the primary bridge-tower of the Gorgon of the Abyss.
The impact was instantaneous and total.
A silent, blinding dome of white-gold and violet annihilation expanded through the leviathan, disintegrating the enemy flagship from within before collapsing its black-matter core in a deafening thunderclap that shattered the siege line forever.
As the burning wreckage of the Gorgon fell away into the sea, the golden planetary shield of the Sun-Emperor’s Citadel lowered.
Standing upon the battlements of the highest ivory spire, an ancient, silver-haired sovereign—the surviving High Elder of Aurelia—dropped to his knees, his hands trembling as he stared up at the majestic golden falcon flagship descending from the heavens.
Beside Seraphina on the gantry, Kaelen wrapped his arm firmly around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest, their lips meeting in a breathless, heated kiss against the roaring wind of victory.
"The citadel is open, little sun," Kaelen murmured against her mouth, his silver eyes burning with breathtaking devotion. "Your people are waiting for their Queen."
