The crossing between continents was a blur of fractured starlight and screaming void-winds.
When the rift snapped shut behind them, Seraphina and Kaelen emerged three thousand feet above the dazzling, hyper-dense sprawl of Tokyo.
Down below, the world’s largest metropolis was gripped by sheer bedlam. The iconic neon ribbons of Shinjuku and Shibuya flickered wildly as rolling blackouts swept across the wards. Tens of thousands of sirens wailed through the night air, drowned out by the deep, rhythmic blare of coastal evacuation horns echoing across the waterfront.
Out in Tokyo Bay, the dark ocean was boiling.
A colossal rift, tearing open the oceanic shelf between the Rainbow Bridge and the artificial island of Odaiba, spilled an oily, luminescent purple slick across the salt water. The bay churned in violent, churning whirlpools, throwing sixty-foot rogue waves against the concrete sea walls and swamping shipping terminals.
From the swirling abyss rose the Abyssal Leviathan: Dagon-Vhul.
The horror was half a mile long—an ancient, chitinous nightmare armored in interlocking plates of blackened abyssal bone. Dozens of glowing, bioluminescent yellow eyes ringed its wedge-shaped skull, while four massive, serrated pectoral fins beat against the ocean, generating localized tidal surges that battered the shoreline. From its barbed dorsal ridge, thick spires of abyssal soul-iron crackled with virulent green lightning, siphoning the Pacific Leyline into its pulsating belly.
High above the bay, Kaelen’s eighty-foot shadow-wings snapped wide against the Pacific gale, holding them steady in the storm.
"That beast was chained in the Mariana Trench during the First Cataclysm," Kaelen rumbled, his molten silver eyes tracking the creature's immense bulk as Gloom-Weaver flared with violent dark-matter energy. "The Ashen Maw didn't just breach the Veil here—they broke the ancient abyssal wards binding the deep ocean."
"Its dorsal spires are acting as lightning rods," Seraphina observed, her amber eyes blazing as her paramedic mind rapidly triaged the tactical field.
Her twenty-foot wings of starlight burned incandescent white-gold, casting a brilliant sunrise over the rain-swept bay.
"Every time those spires discharge into the bay, the shockwave travels along the fault lines beneath the Kanto Plain. If that monster releases a full burst, it will trigger an artificial magnitude-nine earthquake right under the city!"
"Then we skin it before it can ground the charge," Kaelen growled, his jaw tightening into lethal stone.
Before they could dive, the Leviathan sensed their presence.
Sixteen glowing yellow eyes swiveled upward in unison. With an ear-splitting, sub-audible shriek that shattered skyscraper windows along the Minato ward three miles away, Dagon-Vhul breached the surface of the bay.
The colossal beast hurled its thousand-ton front half into the air, its cavernous maw opening wide to reveal concentric rings of jagged, diamond-hard teeth slick with green digestive acid.
From the depths of its gullet, a concentrated beam of pressurized abyssal bile and necrotic lightning erupted skyward, screaming straight toward the two sovereigns like a rising pillar of death.
"Scatter!" Seraphina yelled.
She snapped her wings tight, executing a razor-sharp barrel roll to the left as the corrosive beam sliced through the clouds, boiling the rain into toxic steam that hissed against her white dragon-scale armor.
Kaelen dove right, descending like an obsidian thunderbolt.
He didn't evade the periphery; he sliced straight through the backwash of the beam, his shadow-wings wrapping around him in an aerodynamic drill of pure void-gravity.
He struck the Leviathan’s crested brow as the behemoth crashed back into the frothing bay.
The kinetic impact shook the very sea floor. Kaelen drove Gloom-Weaver deep into the beast’s ocular ridge, burying six feet of enchanted dragon-steel into bone.
Dagon-Vhul shrieked in deafening agony, thrashing violently as hundreds of thousands of tons of sea water surged in a massive tsunami toward the docks of Odaiba.
"Seraphina, the sea wall!" Kaelen’s telepathic roar cut through the spray as he held onto his buried broadsword with one hand, his other clawed gauntlet tearing into the beast's armor to maintain purchase against the thrashing titan. "Hold the water, or the low wards will drown!"
"I've got the wave!" Seraphina called back across their mate-bond.
Banking steeply through the spray, Seraphina dived toward the towering wall of black water surging toward the city. Her Sunblood flared to absolute maximum, igniting her twenty-foot wings in an inferno of pure, radiant dawn that lit up the entire Tokyo coastline.
She hovered directly before the sixty-foot wave, planting her boots in empty air as she thrust both hands forward.
"Break!" she commanded.
