The ancient ossuary exploded into a tempest of flying teeth, shattered femurs, and necrotic rot.
Towering skeletal horrors, stitched together by tendrils of boiling viridian slime, charged forward like colossal battering rams. Their hollow sockets flared with sickly green spite-fire, their bone claws reaching out to tear the flesh from the living sovereigns.
"Behind me!" Kaelen roared.
The High Sovereign stepped into the front rank, planting his armored boots into the stone. He swept Gloom-Weaver in a savage, two-handed horizontal cleave.
A wall of pure dark-matter gravity ripped outward from the blade. The localized kinetic shockwave hit the charging bone-golems like an artillery barrage, instantly pulverizing forty skeletons into fine white powder and collapsing the front line into a pile of smoking calcium dust.
Yet behind the first wave, dozens more swarmed from the ceiling and side tunnels, climbing over their fallen kin with frenzied, unnatural hunger.
"Kaelen, don't just smash them!" Seraphina called out, her amber eyes scanning the swirling necrotic ether holding the abominations together. "The Archon is using a marrow-tether! Every bone you shatter just reassembles into the swarm! We have to sever the soul-threads!"
"Then sever them, my Queen!" Kaelen growled, stepping forward to catch a lunging bone-beast by its jaw, his clawed gauntlet crushing the monster’s skull into fragments while his shadow-wings flared into an impenetrable wall to shield her flank.
Seraphina drew her sunstone recurve bow. In a fluid, breathless blur, she notched three plasma arrows, channeling her pure Sunblood into the crystal shafts until they glowed with incandescent, white-hot heat.
Twang.
The golden arrows screamed through the narrow crypt, leaving trails of burning ozone in their wake. They pierced the central ribcages of three towering golems, detonating not with concussive force, but with a radiant, purifying wave of five-thousand-degree solar flame.
The holy fire incinerated the viridian slime instantly, breaking the marrow-tether at the spiritual frequency. The bones clattered to the floor, cleansed of all corruption, resting in peaceful, final silence once more.
Across the chamber, Archon Malidrax hissed in fury, his three vertical eyes flaring with panic as his bone army melted into dust.
"Insolent vermin!" the Archon shrieked, swinging the curved Scythe of the Black Weft in a wide, sweeping arc.
A razor-thin crescent of pure anti-matter hissed through the air, carving through limestone pillars and flying straight toward Seraphina’s neck.
Before the blade could reach her, Kaelen blurred across the room.
He interposed his massive body between the scythe and Seraphina, raising his left dragon-steel vambrace to block the strike. The anti-matter edge bit deep into the enchanted metal, carving through dragon-scale and drawing a hissing spray of immortal crimson blood.
Kaelen didn't even flinch. His molten silver eyes locked onto Malidrax’s gaunt, pale face with terrifying, cold amusement.
"Is that the best your Void-Mother can muster?" Kaelen mocked, his deep voice shaking the limestone dust from the ceiling.
With his bare, bloodied left hand, Kaelen clamped his fingers directly around the neck of the scythe's shaft, arresting its deadly momentum. Before the Archon could pull away, Kaelen channeled a devastating pulse of dark-matter gravity straight through the handle, shattering the ancient anti-matter relic into a million smoking iron fragments.
Malidrax stumbled backward, screaming as the psychic feedback scorched his claws.
"Now, Seraphina!" Kaelen commanded.
Seraphina vaulted off Kaelen’s armored shoulder like a soaring falcon. Her twenty-foot wings of starlight flared with blinding, celestial brilliance, pushing her through the air with unstoppable momentum.
She landed directly upon the Archon’s chest, driving him violently to the stone floor.
Her right sunstone dagger flashed in the darkness, pinning Malidrax’s right shoulder to the flagstones in a burst of superheated plasma. Before he could scream, her left hand pressed firmly against his forehead, her Sunblood flaring in a surgical, blinding nova of golden dawn.
"Your harvest is revoked," Seraphina whispered fiercely.
The white-hot solar fire poured through the Archon’s skull, burning out his necrotic channels and incinerating his corrupted soul from within. Malidrax convulsed violently, his three vertical eyes bursting into white smoke before his porcelain body dissolved into a harmless heap of gray ash upon the damp limestone.
Silence fell over the catacombs, save for the steady drip of water from the ceiling and their synchronized, ragged breathing.
Kaelen walked over, looking down at the ash before turning his gaze to Seraphina. He sheathed Gloom-Weaver and reached out, his bare, bleeding hand gently pulling her up from the floor and straight against his chest.
"You fight like a storm, little sun," he murmured, his lips brushing the warm skin of her throat where her crescent mark pulsed with vibrant life.
Seraphina leaned into his embrace, her hands gently covering his bleeding vambrace as her golden healing warmth seeps through the metal to knit his flesh together.
"And you block anti-matter blades like an idiot," she whispered back with a breathless smile, looking up into his silver eyes.
Kaelen chuckled darkly, leaning down to capture her lips in a fierce, passionate kiss that drove away the ancient chill of the catacombs.
