The black basalt ramparts of the Nether-Spire trembled as the pale aurora cascaded across the shattered skies of the Outer Rim. Freezing winds howled through the colonnades, carrying the iron tang of ancient sorcery and the faint, bitter scent of crushed ozone.
Aurelia stood upon the edge of the obsidian dais, the hem of her battle-leathers whipping wildly against her greaves. Within her chest, the Five Bound Shards pulsed in discordant harmony—a molten thrum of Astral light and Frost-Flame answering the terrible vibration rising from the abyss below.
"The seal is fracturing faster than anticipated," she murmured, her breath crystallizing in the biting air.
Behind her, Malakor’s silhouette was an anchor of immovable darkness. The dread commander stepped forward, the heavy click of his gauntlets breaking the rhythm of the wind. As he drew near, the ambient cold yielded to the familiar, suffocating warmth of his aura—a dark, possessive heat that made the hair at the nape of her neck rise.
"Then let it break," Malakor said, his voice low, scraping like drawn steel over stone. He came to a halt directly behind her, close enough that she could feel the steady rise and fall of his chest against her shoulder blades. "We did not slaughter our way through the sunken trenches and ash-wastes to balk before an empty throat of stars."
Aurelia turned her head slightly, catching the feral gleam in his crimson-ringed eyes. A fierce, electric tension pulled taut between them, unspoken yet heavy with every drop of blood they had shared across a hundred battlefields. His gloved hand rose, heavy and deliberate, coming to rest at the curve of her jaw. His thumb grazed the high contour of her cheekbone, dragging down toward her collar with a lingering pressure that sent a sharp shudder through her core.
"You feel it, don't you?" she whispered, leaning minutely into his touch despite herself. "The resonance. It isn't just siphon energy down there. It is intelligent. It knows we bear the Shards."
"Let it hunger," Malakor replied softly, his fingers shifting to tangle lightly into the dark silk of her hair, tilting her face upward. His gaze burned into hers, dark and unyielding. "It will learn what everything else in this wretched world has learned: what belongs to you is mine to defend, and what belongs to me does not bend."
Before she could answer, the obsidian floor beneath their boots grooved with blinding fracture lines.
A deafening groan reverberated from the abyssal rift. From the depths of the sunken chasm, three titanic conduits of pale, translucent bone surged upward, coiling around the perimeter of the dais like predatory serpents. Raw, unrefined Nether-Currents bled from their seams, lashing into the sky and siphoning the very moisture and warmth from the atmosphere.
"Archon Vaelis’s failsafe," Aurelia hissed, stepping back into the fighting stance forged over countless sieges. She raised her right arm, the Frost-Flame igniting along her forearm in a roaring vortex of sapphire fire. "He linked the planetary anchor to a dead star's gravity well!"
"Then we sever the anchors," Malakor growled.
He drew Void-Reaver in a single fluid arc. The black blade screamed as dark-matter runes flared along its spine. With an explosive crack of displaced air, Malakor lunged toward the nearest bone conduit. The blade cleaved through the calcified carapace with brutal precision, spraying showers of violet ichor and volatile essence across the stone.
Aurelia moved in lockstep. Channeling the Fourth Shard, she threw her palms forward, releasing a tidal shockwave of crystalline frost that flash-froze the second conduit before it could whip across the platform. The structure shattered under the sudden thermal shock into thousands of lethal shards.
Yet even as the second conduit collapsed, the central siphon dilated. At its core, an ethereal eye of pale, weeping light opened, locking its gaze directly upon Aurelia’s chest. A devastating gravitational pull seized her, dragging her toward the yawning precipice.
"Aurelia!"
Malakor’s voice cut through the roaring vortex. In an instant, his arm hooked around her waist, ripping her out of the vacuum’s grip and pulling her hard against his chest. The kinetic force drove them both against the basalt wall. He shielded her body with his own as explosive fragments rained down upon the platform.
Chest to chest, their breath mingled in rapid, ragged gasps. For a suspended second, amidst the falling debris and howling wind, his arm tightened around her waist like an iron vice. His dark eyes flicked down to her lips, visceral hunger warring with raw protective fury.
"You stay beside me," he rasped, his voice raw.
Aurelia placed her palm against the cold steel of his breastplate, her pulse hammering wildly against her ribs. A fierce smile touched her lips. "Always. Now help me break its heart."
