The High Vault of the Progenitors lay deep beneath the roots of the black star metal ziggurat, carved into the bedrock where the first ley-veins of the continent converged.
The chamber was a sphere of solid, translucent selenite fifty paces across. Inside, there was no air, no draft, and no heat; the floor was a basin of liquid mercury that mirrored the domed ceiling above with unnatural, silver precision.
Floating in the center of the mercury pool was a colossal sphere of black crystal, five cubits wide, etched with thousands of pulsing golden meridians.
Aurelia walked across the surface of the mercury, her boots leaving no ripples upon the metallic mirror.
Around her neck, the Ring of the Primordial Vessel hummed in quiet, deep resonance with the black crystal. The eight glyphs along her collarbone cast shifting, geometric shadows across the mercury floor, weaving with the golden meridians like fingers interlacing in the dark.
Malakor walked three paces behind her, his heavy tread creating faint, shivering rings across the silvery liquid that smoothed away the moment his boots lifted. His hand never left the hilt of his great sword, his amber eyes scanning the vaulted ceiling where petrified constellations slowly turned in an artificial sky.
"This is not a map of our world," Malakor muttered, his deep voice carrying the flat certainty of an experienced navigator. He pointed the tip of his scabbard toward the southern quadrant of the sphere. "The Ashen Wastes, the Sunken Spire, the Razorback Spine... they're barely a fingernail's breadth on this stone. Look at the western expanse. There's an ocean three times wider than the Glass Shoals, and continents shaped like shattered shields."
"The Shattered Expanse," Saphira said, standing at the edge of the selenite basin, her hands folded serenely within the wide sleeves of her white silk robes. "Before the Great Fracturing, the world did not consist of three shattered seas. There were nine continents, bound by the Seven Pillars of Heaven. When the First Throne cracked, seven of the continents were cast beyond the Void-Curtain—a barrier of permanent astral tempests that drowned navigation in madness."
"And now?" Aurelia asked, stopping before the black crystal sphere.
She reached out with her right hand, her fingertips brushing the cold, slick surface of the relic.
The moment her skin touched the stone, the eight nodes of the Primordial Vessel flared into brilliant alignment.
A pulse of silver-violet fire detonated outward, racing along the golden meridians like lightning running down a fuse. The black sphere shuddered, its core igniting with the blinding radiance of an unclouded noon.
The mercury beneath their boots boiled with light, projecting a colossal, three-dimensional star-chart that filled the entire selenite dome.
Across the projection, the vast ocean beyond the western horizon was mapped in exquisite, terrifying detail.
Five thousand leagues past the Outer Reefs, where the charts of Val-Khor marked only sea-monsters and the edge of the world, lay an enormous archipelago of crimson-sand islands, arranged in a perfect, geometric ring around a vortex of weeping darkness.
"The Obsidian Caldera," Aurelia read the ancient script projecting through the aether. "The Cradle of the Eclipse."
"And look at the fleet marks," Malakor growled, stepping up beside her, his breath hot against her ear.
His scarred finger pointed toward three dozen black-and-gold sigils hovering around the perimeter of the archipelago. "Those aren't dragon-galleys. The markers indicate ironclads twice the size of the Black Leviathan. Flying the standard of the Eclipse Vanguard."
"The True Dynasty," Saphira whispered from the basin edge, her voice trembling with ancient dread. "When Typhon fled into the eastern mists, he was not the emperor. He was merely an exiled prince. The true court—the Iron Lords of the Eclipse—withdrew beyond the Void-Curtain to build their war-forges in the dark."
The projection shifted, highlighting a colossal naval marker moving steadily eastward along the ancient ley-currents, charting a direct course toward the Glass Shoals.
"They felt the seal break," Aurelia realized, her silver-violet eyes narrowing into cold, predatory slits. "The moment the Leviathan was soothed and the Seventh Shard joined the crown, the Void-Curtain collapsed. They aren't waiting for us to find them. They are already sailing to reclaim their strayed cattle."
Malakor’s lips curled into a slow, feral grin that made the scars along his jaw stand out in sharp relief.
He didn't look at the map; he looked at Aurelia, his amber eyes burning with an unholy, joyous madness that defied the gathering storm.
"Thirty-six ironclads," Malakor rasped, his hand coming down to grip her waist, pulling her flush against his armored side. "Twice the size of our flagship. It seems, my empress, our little holiday in the gardens is officially over."
"Order the Vanguard to muster, Saphira," Aurelia commanded, turning away from the projection with absolute, imperial finality. "The White City will forge the plating. The fleet sails for the Obsidian Caldera before the new moon."
