The golden beam from the purified Sun-Mirror continued to lance into the heavens, piercing the perpetual gloom that had hung over the Serrated Crags for five millennia.
Below the pinnacle, the surviving Ashen Maw forces had shattered into disorganized retreats, pursued relentlessly into the jagged gorges by the roaring Night-Drakes of the Black Vanguard. The ivory towers of Caelum’s Reach, long defiled by necrotic siege-machinery, stood cleansed under the warm, radiant glow of the restored beacon.
Yet behind the bronze pedestal of the great lens lay an arched portal carved from seamless white marble, sealed by an ancient solar iris that had remained locked since the Fall of Caelum.
Kaelen stood beside Seraphina, his dragon-steel gauntlet gently resting against the small of her back. His eighty-foot shadow-wings were drawn tight, sheltering them both from the biting mountain draft. The sharp scent of his blood and cedar mingled with the warm, ozone-rich air radiating from her skin.
"The Ivory Archives," Kaelen murmured, his silver eyes fixed upon the dormant solar runes along the portal's lintel. "Even my ancestors were forbidden from entering this sanctuary. The records of the First Age—the true origin of the Veil and the celestial engines—are sealed within these vaults."
Seraphina stepped forward, her hand instinctively rising to the glowing crescent mark at her throat. "My blood brought the mirror to life. Let’s see what my family left behind."
She laid her bare palm flat against the center of the solar iris.
The white marble hummed with vibrant, joyous life. Veins of liquid gold chased across the door's surface, and with a soft, harmonic chime, the interlocking stone leaves of the iris slid open, releasing a breath of air that had been preserved for five thousand years—sweet, dry, smelling of ancient papyrus, dried jasmine, and starlight.
They stepped through the threshold together.
The interior was a cavernous cathedral of knowledge. Towering shelves of white crystal soared hundreds of feet into the gloom, lined with countless glowing scrolls, star-charts of forgotten constellations, and crystalline memory-prisms suspended in slow, hypnotic levitation.
In the center of the rotunda stood a raised platform of polished alabaster. Hovering above it was an immense, multi-layered celestial orrery forged from white gold and dark glass, depicting not just the Seven Spheres, but nine concentric orbital planes surrounding a pulsing core of raw celestial light.
"Nine planes?" Seraphina breathed, approaching the orrery. "The legends always speak of the Seven Spheres."
"There were never seven," a spectral, melodious voice chimed through the chamber.
From the central crystal column of the orrery, a projection of pure golden starlight coalesced into the ethereal silhouette of a tall, regal woman. She possessed pointed ears, eyes of liquid amber, and magnificent wings of solar fire that mirrored Seraphina’s own with uncanny precision.
Seraphina froze, the breath catching in her chest. "Mother?"
"A memory-echo of Queen Aurelia," Kaelen whispered reverently, his hand tightening softly on Seraphina's shoulder, anchoring her against the shock.
The spectral queen smiled, her radiant gaze sweeping over Seraphina with deep, heartbreaking warmth before shifting to acknowledge Kaelen’s dark silhouette at her side.
"If you stand before this archive, my child, the fracture has reached the final hour," Queen Aurelia’s echo spoke, her voice carrying the sorrow of an entire fallen empire. "The Veil was not created to protect our realms from the mortal world. It was forged as a prison wall... to contain the Ninth Sphere."
Kaelen stiffened, his jaw locking into hard, predatory tension. "The Primordial Void."
"Yes, Sovereign of the Night," the projection nodded solemnly. "The entity known as the Void-Mother does not sleep outside reality; she is trapped beneath the foundations of the mortal world itself. The celestial engines are not merely anchors. They are leashes. Five millennia ago, the Archon of the Maw corrupted the seventh lock, forcing me to scatter the Sunblood line into the mortal pen to keep the key from their grasp."
Aurelia’s gaze returned to Seraphina, her phantom hand reaching out, glowing with soft, motherly tenderness.
"You carry the Master Key within your soul, Seraphina. But Azgorath knows this. He does not merely seek the Sun-Mirror. He marches toward the Crater of the Fallen Star in the mortal realm... where the final seal is buried beneath the foundations of Chicago."
The projection flickered as the memory-crystal’s power waned, dissolving into cascading motes of golden starlight.
Silence descended upon the ancient archives, heavy and suffocating.
Seraphina turned to Kaelen, her amber eyes burning with fierce, terrified realization. "Chicago isn't just where I grew up, Kaelen. It’s ground zero for the end of the world."
Kaelen stepped close, his hands cupping her face, his silver eyes blazing with dark, sovereign fire.
"Then we will return to your mortal city," he growled, pressing his forehead against hers in an unyielding vow. "And we will drown their vanguard in their own blood."
