The spring tide arrived with the thunder of a thousand drums and the roar of a freshening easterly wind.
In the harbor of Val-Khor, the black water was alive with the movement of eighty war-galleys and twelve bone-armored dreadnoughts. At the center of the armada rode the Black Leviathan, its three-headed dragon prow re-gilded with pure silver, its broad decks bristling with four thousand veteran shock-marines of the Vanguard.
Upon the battlements of the Bull-Horn Redoubt, thirty thousand citizens of the newly unified realm had gathered to bear witness. They held high banners of white silk bearing the Seven-Pointed Crown, chanting the Empress’s name in a cadence that rolled across the waves like summer thunder.
Aurelia stood upon the raised bridge of the flagship, her boots planted firm against the pitch-sealed planks.
She was clad in full imperial war-plate—burnished shadow-steel edged in silver filigree, forged from the melted blades of Cedric's usurper lords. Upon her brow rested the Crown of Thorns, its seven ancient gems pulsing in synchronous harmony with the tides. At her side hung her ancestral blade, polished to a mirror shine, reflecting the bright morning sun.
Beside her, leaning one armored forearm upon the ship’s bronze binnacle, stood Malakor.
He wore his master-crafted harness of matte-black iron, the heavy pelt of a snow-beast draped across his wide shoulders, his massive two-handed great sword sheathed diagonally across his back. His scarred visage was turned toward the open sea, his amber eyes alight with the lethal, predatory hunger of a predator about to enter a new hunting ground.
Lady Vespera ascended the quarterdeck steps, snapping a crisp naval salute.
"The fleet is provisioned for four moons, Your Grace," Vespera reported, her sea-green eyes gleaming with fierce pride. "Water tanks filled from the high mountain runoffs, magazines stocked with dwarven blasting powder, and six cohorts of mountain infantry ready below decks. The navigational charts to the Jade Spire are locked in the compass house."
"Signal the armada, Admiral," Aurelia commanded, her voice carrying that quiet, effortless resonance that commanded armies and calmed leviathans alike. "Cast off all moorings. Set course due east, straight through the heart of the cleared mists."
"By your command, Empress!" Vespera turned, barking orders to the flag-lieutenants, whose signal lanterns flashed green and gold into the morning air.
Across the bay, mooring lines thick as tree trunks splashed into the foam. The dragon-iron paddle wheels of the dreadnoughts began their deep, rhythmic churning, turning the harbor into a boiling basin of white wake as the fleet surged forward toward the open ocean.
As the cliffs of Val-Khor began to shrink into the western horizon, Malakor stepped up behind Aurelia, his massive chest pressing against her armored back, sheltering her from the rising salt spray.
His heavy, gauntleted hands settled over hers on the wooden rail of the bridge, his fingers intertwining with hers. Through the cold steel of their armor, the dark soul-tether hummed—a scorching, intimate current of shadow and starlight that bound their breath into a single rhythm.
"Look at that horizon," Malakor murmured against the curve of her ear, his breath warm and steady against her skin. "No rifts. No ash falling from the clouds. Just an unbroken sea and an ancient continent waiting to kneel before your crown."
Aurelia leaned her head back against his shoulder, letting her eyes sweep the endless expanse of blue stretching before their fleet.
Beneath her breastplate, the Seven Shards thrummed with a deep, victorious vibration. Two hundred and fifty leagues of blood, ice, betrayal, and slaughter lay behind them. They had crawled out of the slave pits, broken archdukes, shattered ancient gods, and reunited the fractured bones of the world.
Yet as she looked toward the faint, glittering shimmer of the white jade spires rising far across the eastern sea, she knew their journey was far from its end.
She turned in the circle of his arms, looking up into the scarred, beautiful face of the butcher who had given her his soul.
"Are you ready to conquer another world, warlord?" she whispered, her lips curving into a breathless, wicked smile.
Malakor’s lips parted in a savage, wolfish grin as he leaned down, claiming her mouth in a searing, possessive kiss that tasted of sea-salt, iron, and the infinite promise of tomorrow.
"I am ready to conquer everything, my empress," he rasped against her lips, his hand tightening on her waist as the flagship breached the open ocean. "So long as you are the one sitting on the throne."
And with the sails full of the eastern gale and the Seven Shards blazing upon her brow, Aurelia sailed into the dawn.
