The dark furs of the high bed swallowed them whole, muffling the distant roar of the coastal surf.
Malakor lowered Aurelia onto the mattress with deliberate, predatory restraint. He did not rush. He caged her between his forearms, the thick, roped muscles of his shoulders flexing as he pinned her gaze beneath his own. In the dim, amber glow of the hearth, his amber eyes were two molten coins, stripped of the warlord’s calculated malice, burning only with the feral, single-minded devotion of a man who worshipped the ground beneath her boots.
"Tell me you don't feel the cold," Malakor rasped, his hand sliding slowly down the side of her neck, his calloused thumb tracing the line of her collarbone where the seven glowing glyphs pulsed with faint, steady luminescence.
"With you?" Aurelia whispered, her hands rising to press flat against his chest, feeling the heavy, thunderous cadence of his heart beneath her palms. "I haven't felt the cold since you pulled me from the Ashen Wastes."
A low, dark rumble of satisfaction vibrated deep in his throat.
His fingers hooked into the thin silk of her chemise, sliding the fabric off her shoulders with unhurried reverence until it pooled at her waist, exposing her pale, porcelain skin to the warm firelight. Her breasts rose and fell with her shallow, quickening breaths, the dark peaks tightening under his burning scrutiny.
Malakor dipped his head, his mouth claiming the sensitive junction where her neck met her shoulder.
His lips were hot, slightly parted, his tongue trailing a path of liquid fire down to the hollow of her throat. When his teeth caught the soft flesh just above her collarbone, a sharp, ragged gasp tore from her lips, her back arching off the furs as electricity shot directly to her core.
"Malakor..." she breathed, her fingers tangling in the thick, dark waves of his hair, pulling him closer rather than pushing him away.
He didn't answer with words.
His mouth moved lower, capturing one taut, aching nipple, his tongue swirling around the peak before drawing it deep into the scorching heat of his mouth. Aurelia whined, a sound of pure, unvarnished surrender that made Malakor’s frame shudder against hers with violent restraint. His hand slid down her stomach, his palm rough and calloused against her velvet skin, pushing past the bundled silk to cup the swollen, weeping heat between her thighs.
When his long fingers parted her slick folds, circling the sensitive nub of her pleasure with firm, rhythmic pressure, her hips bucked into his touch.
"You're soaking for me, little sovereign," he growled against her breast, his voice thick and rough with desire. "Wet and trembling."
"You make me tremble," she confessed, her voice breaking into a shiver as two of his fingers slid deep inside her, stretching her with agonizing slowness. "Only you."
A feral growl tore from his chest.
He stripped away his remaining trousers with one savage jerk of his arm, tossing them to the floor before positioning his hips between her parted thighs. The blunt, fever-hot head of his length pressed against her soaking entrance, heavy and demanding, reminding her with deliberate friction of the sheer size of the butcher she commanded.
"Look at me, Aurelia," he commanded, his eyes blazing in the shadows. "Look at the man who holds your life."
She opened her eyes, meeting his gaze with unyielding, fierce starlight.
Malakor drove into her with a single, deep, unsparing thrust that buried him to the hilt.
Aurelia’s head snapped back against the pillows, her breath tearing from her lungs in a breathless cry that was half-agony, half-ecstasy. The fullness was absolute, stretching her to her limits, anchoring her soul in a tidal wave of pure sensation.
He paused, letting her adjust to his breadth, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles jumped beneath the skin, his forehead pressed against hers as he fought for control.
Then he began to move.
It was a rhythm of pure, unhurried ruin. Long, deep strokes that drew out her weeping heat, setting a cadence that made the heavy cedar bedstead groan against the stone floor. Aurelia wrapped her legs around his waist, locking him to her, her heels digging into the corded muscle of his thighs as she met every thrust with desperate, answering fury.
The Seven Shards beneath her skin flared in wild harmony with their shared cadence, casting shifting auroras of silver, violet, and gold across the ceiling.
"Aurelia..." Malakor’s voice broke into a ragged curse as his pace quickened, his hands sliding beneath her hips to lift her higher, driving himself deeper, harder, chasing the edge of the world.
"Take me, Malakor," she sobbed into his mouth, her core contracting violently around him in the first wave of a shattering, blinding climax. "Take everything!"
With a guttural roar of pure surrender, Malakor buried himself to the hilt and spilled his burning seed deep inside his empress, collapsing into the furs as their two souls merged into a single, unbreakable dawn.
