The golden tempest of the Seventh Shard turned the sanctum into a roaring furnace.
Sheets of primordial fire peeled from Typhon’s blade, melting the bronze braziers along the walls into liquid slag. The heat was blinding, searing the lungs with every breath, turning the air so dry it cracked the lips to bleeding in seconds.
Typhon surged forward, his star metal broadsword whistling in a relentless, golden flurry of lethal strikes. Every blow landed with the weight of a falling mountain, driving Aurelia backward step by agonizing step across the slick, oil-covered mosaics. Her ancestral blade shrieked against the divine steel, its silver light flickering as the sheer, ancient ferocity of the First Era threatened to overwhelm her defenses.
"You cannot hold the crown, girl!" Typhon’s voice roared over the howling flames, his golden-scaled throat pulsing with terrifying power. "You are flesh! You are dust! A mortal heart cannot beat with the rhythm of seven suns!"
A searing backhand strike from Typhon’s gauntlet caught Aurelia across the cheek, sending her crashing into the shattered base of a marble pillar. The Crown of Thorns slipped from her brow, clattering across the burning flagstones. A sharp, ragged gasp tore from her throat as blood welled along her jaw, the silver-violet glow in her chest sputtering under the crushing weight of Typhon’s hearth-fire.
Typhon raised his broadsword with both hands, stepping forward to deliver the executioner’s strike.
"Now," the Emperor snarled, "return my birthright!"
The blade descended—and was caught.
Not by steel, but by bare, scarred flesh and bone.
Malakor lunged from the smoke, his bare, unarmored hands snapping shut around the glowing star metal blade mid-stroke.
The superheated edge bit deep into his palms, hissing and sizzling as the primordial fire scorched his flesh to the bone. The agony was unimaginable, enough to make an army of men scream for death, but Malakor did not let out a sound. His teeth were gritted so hard they cracked, veins bulging along his neck like thick, black cables, his amber eyes burning with an unholy, terrifying madness that defied the laws of gods and men.
"I told you once, lizard," Malakor rasped through clenched, bloody teeth, his shadow-magic surging through his shredded hands, wrapping around the golden fire of the blade like a coil of strangling iron. "She. Is. Not. Yours."
Typhon’s slit-pupiled eyes widened in utter disbelief. He tried to wrench the sword free, but Malakor’s grip was an unbreakable vice forged in the depths of the Pit of Ouros.
"Die, beast!" Typhon roared, bringing his armored knee up into Malakor’s cracked ribs with bone-splintering force.
Malakor grunted, vomiting blood across Typhon’s gilded chest-plate, but his grip never slipped by a millimeter. With a feral roar that rattled the burning rafters of the sanctum, Malakor used his own shattered body as a lever, wrenching the Emperor downward, exposing the vulnerable curve of Typhon’s neck beneath his dragon-scale gorget.
"Aurelia, now!" Malakor bellowed, his voice tearing from his bloody throat. "Take his head!"
Aurelia did not hesitate.
She surged from the rubble of the pillar, drawing upon every drop of will, every shred of agony, and every heartbeat she had shared with the man bleeding before her. She did not channel the cold starlight of the north; she channeled the raw, unfettered fury of a sovereign whose mate was being torn apart.
Her ancestral blade ignited with a terrifying, blinding fusion of starlight, void-gravity, and the dark shadow-fire she had shared through their soul-tether.
She struck with the speed of descending lightning.
The silver blade cleaved clean through the gap in Typhon’s dragon-scale gorget, severing the Emperor’s head from his shoulders in a single, devastating sweep.
Golden blood geysered into the roaring flames, splashing across Malakor’s face and chest like liquid sunlight.
Typhon’s headless body convulsed once before collapsing into the burning oil, the star metal sword slipping harmlessly from Malakor’s ruined, smoking hands.
Above the severed neck, the Seventh Shard hovered in mid-air—its golden-amber fire suddenly turning wild, uncontrolled, and expanding into a nova of apocalyptic energy that threatened to detonate the entire Black Leviathan.
Aurelia didn't look at the shard.
She dropped to her knees beside Malakor, her arms wrapping around his massive, trembling frame, catching him as his knees finally buckled beneath the horrific agony of his burned hands and shattered ribs.
"Malakor!" she cried, her voice cracking with pure, unvarnished terror as she cradled his blood-spattered face against her chest. "Look at me! Malakor!"
His amber eyes fluttered open, hooded and hazy with pain, but as they focused on her face, a faint, bloody smirk curved the corner of his lips.
"We... took his head, empress," he rasped weakly, his head resting against the curve of her throat.
"You fool," she wept softly, silver tears tracing through the ash on her cheeks. "You absolute, beautiful fool."
Above them, the Seventh Shard pulsed violently, reaching its critical threshold.
Aurelia looked up at the expanding golden nova, her eyes hardening into unbreakable diamond. She reached out her right hand, wrapping her fingers directly around the Seventh Keystone.
"Kneel," Aurelia commanded the cosmos.
And the universe obeyed.
