The great bath of the High Citadel was carved from a single basin of pale serpentine marble, fed by subterranean hot springs that bubbled up through channels of polished copper.
Steam hung thick and fragrant in the vast chamber, scented with crushed cedar needles, dried lavender, and the sharp, medicinal bite of winter-mint oils. The stained-glass windows overlooking the western harbor had been shuttered with heavy cedar panels against the coastal gale, leaving the cavernous room illuminated only by floating tallow candles and the warm, amber glow of the braziers.
Aurelia leaned back against the smooth marble ledge, submerged to her shoulders in the steaming, crystal water.
Her silver hair was slicked back, floating around her like spun moonlight. For the first time in five hundred leagues, the ache in her marrow was not the tearing violence of shattered aether, but the deep, bone-weary exhaustion of mortal flesh pushed past every conceivable limit. Across her chest, beneath the surface of the scented water, the six silver-violet marks of the bound Shards rested in quiet, rhythmic harmony—not a crown of war, but a gentle, steady pulse that warmed her blood from within.
The water shifted behind her with a deep, liquid surge.
A broad, heavily muscled frame settled into the basin, the heat of his body radiating through the water even before his skin touched hers. Large, calloused hands slid over her wet shoulders, his thumbs pressing into the knotted tension at the base of her neck with firm, unhurried precision.
Aurelia let out a long, ragged sigh, her head falling back against Malakor’s chest.
"You're wound tighter than a siege-ballista," Malakor rumbled low in his throat, his deep voice vibrating directly against her shoulder blades.
His bare chest was a landscape of violence—the jagged white furrow from a drake's claw in Ouros, the pitted burn where the Herald's lightning had scorched him, and the faint silver scars from their battle on the Leviathan's brow. Yet as his hands moved down her spine, working the tight muscles along her ribs, his touch held an agonizingly gentle reverence.
"Ruling is more exhausting than butchering, Malakor," she murmured, closing her eyes as his hands found the curve of her waist, pulling her back until her hips rested flush against his thighs. "Vespera brought six manifests of grain reserves before we even reached the gates. The merchant guilds are begging for audience, and the northern clans want reparations for the burned watchtowers."
"Let them beg," Malakor growled softly against the wet curve of her neck. His lips pressed a scorching, open-mouthed kiss beneath her ear, his teeth lightly grazing the sensitive skin before his tongue soothed the sting. "Vespera can handle the grain. The clans can have the traitors' gold. You bled for this realm, Aurelia. You don't owe them your peace."
He shifted in the water, his hands sliding around her front to cup her ribs, lifting her slightly so she sat straddling his lap beneath the surface.
The heat of his arousal was an unyielding, rigid brand pressing against her slick core through the churning water, making her breath hitch with sudden, sharp anticipation. Her hands came up to rest on his broad, wet shoulders, her fingers digging into the hard cords of muscle that had carried her up from the bowels of the earth.
She opened her eyes, meeting the hooded, burning amber of his gaze.
"You speak as though you intend to keep me hidden away in these chambers forever, warlord," she whispered, her lips parting, a teasing, dangerous challenge curling the corner of her mouth.
"Not forever," Malakor rasped, his hands sliding down her hips, his fingers digging into the soft flesh of her thighs, spreading them wider over his lap. "Just until I'm certain you remember who you belong to when the crown is set aside."
"I am the Empress, Malakor," she countered, leaning forward until her damp breasts pressed against the scarred expanse of his chest, her heart hammering a fierce, wild rhythm against his ribs. "I belong to no one."
"Liar," he growled against her mouth.
His hand dipped beneath the water between their bodies, his calloused thumb finding her swollen, weeping center, stroking the sensitive cleft with deliberate, agonizing pressure that tore a breathless gasp from her throat. Her hips arched involuntarily against his palm, her fingers tangling in his thick, wet hair, pulling his face down to hers.
"Say it," he demanded into her parted lips, his thumb circling her ache, driving her to the very precipice with terrifying speed. "Tell me whose blade guards your throne. Tell me whose hands keep you whole."
"Yours," she cried out softly, the word swallowed by his mouth as his hips surged upward beneath the water, burying himself inside her with one deep, possessive thrust that banished the memory of every cold star in the cosmos.
