The Imperial Bedchamber was a cavern of gilded ostentation, but the cold sea-wind had shattered the stained glass of the western balcony, tearing the velvet draperies to shreds.
Snowflakes drifted across the polished cedar floor, settling on the furs piled high upon the massive bed of carved ebony. Outside, the bells of the lower wards had ceased their frantic tolling, replaced by the steady, measured cadence of Vanguard sentries patrolling the ramparts.
Aurelia stood at the shattered threshold of the balcony, her hands resting on the stone balustrade.
The Crown of Thorns lay discarded on a small side table, alongside her ancestral blade and the blackened cuirass she had worn through five months of relentless bloodshed. Clad only in a thin, dark silk chemise that offered no defense against the winter chill, she stared down at the frozen harbor of Val-Khor. The ice she had raised still locked the Syndicate’s broken war-galleys in its grip, glistening like diamonds beneath the pale moonlight.
Beneath her skin, the Six Shards pulsed with a slow, tranquil rhythm. For the first time since the first fragment had been carved from the frozen tomb in the north, they did not pull at her sanity. They were whole. They were hers.
A heavy cloak of black wolf-pelt draped over her shoulders, followed by the immediate, suffocating heat of Malakor’s chest pressing against her spine.
His bare arms—thick, corded with muscle, and covered in pale scars—slid around her waist, his hands splaying over her stomach to pull her firmly against him. He wore only loose linen trousers, unbothered by the icy draft whistling through the terrace. The blistering shadow-magic radiating from his flesh was an inferno that instantly banished the cold seeping into her limbs.
"You should be resting," Malakor rumbled, his deep voice vibrating against her shoulder blades. He rested his chin on the curve of her neck, his lips brushing the sensitive skin beneath her ear. "The lords will be waiting on their knees at first light."
"Let them wait," Aurelia whispered, tilting her head back against his shoulder. Her hands came up to cover his, her fingers tracing the rough, calloused knuckles that had crushed a regent's throat only hours before. "The realm hasn't slept in three centuries, Malakor. One morning of waiting won't break them."
Malakor’s hands shifted, his fingers sliding upward beneath the silk of her chemise, trailing along the curve of her ribs to cup the soft swell of her breast. A ragged gasp caught in her throat as his calloused thumbs brushed over her nipples, teasing them into tight peaks that ached with sudden, sharp need.
"Look at me," he commanded softly, turning her in the circle of his arms until her back was pressed against the stone balustrade.
The silver light spilling from the moon caught the sharp angles of his face, softening the harshness of the scars tracing his jaw and brow. His amber eyes burned with that dark, ravenous hunger that never waned—a devotion so complete, so terrifyingly possessive, that it rivaled the power of the cosmic crown inside her heart.
"You took back your throne, Aurelia," he rasped, his hand coming up to tangle in the loose silver strands of her hair, tilting her face up toward his. "You broke the gods. You brought an army across frozen mountains and drowned a pirate fleet with a gesture."
"And what did you do?" she whispered, her lips parting, her breath ghosting across his mouth.
"I stood by my sovereign," he said, his voice dropping into a low, husky growl that sent shivers straight to her core. "And now I intend to claim my reward."
He lifted her effortlessly, seating her on the broad marble rail of the balcony. The silk of her chemise rode up her thighs, exposing her pale, bare skin to the freezing sea air for half a heartbeat before Malakor stepped between her knees, his broad, fever-hot body sealing the gap.
His mouth came down on hers with ferocious, bruising hunger.
It was a kiss of conquest and surrender, dark and intoxicating. Aurelia hooked her legs around his waist, pulling him flush against her wet, aching heat. Her fingers dug into the corded muscles of his back, feeling the scars that mapped his violent life, anchoring herself to the only man in the world who didn't fear the monster she had become.
When he broke the kiss, both of their breaths came in ragged plumes in the freezing air.
Malakor’s gaze bored into hers, fierce and unyielding. With slow, deliberate precision, his hand slid down between their bodies, parting the thin silk to find the slick, burning heat awaiting him.
"You are my empress," he muttered against her swollen lips, his fingers stroking her with agonizing slowness, drawing a sharp, breathless moan from her throat. "And you will never face the dark alone again."
"Never," she promised, her voice breaking into a shiver of pure pleasure as he lifted her slightly, his hips aligning with hers, ready to lose themselves in the fire of their hard-won victory.
Above the silent city, the first light of a peaceful dawn began to kiss the eastern peaks.
