The threshold did not cast them back into the Valley of Wailing Runes as weary wanderers; it expelled them like a fallen star crashing through the firmament.
A pillar of incandescent violet and blinding silver slammed into the smoking center of the valley, vaporizing the descending ash and shattering the low-hanging gloom into glittering shards of light. The concussive blast drove the front lines of Lady Vespera’s marines to their knees, shields clattering against stone as the bitter wind turned suddenly warm, sweet with the scent of blooming night-jasmine and clean rain.
When the brilliance faded, two figures remained atop the pulverized titan-altar.
Aurelia stood tall, the ancestral blade resting point-down in the obsidian gravel before her. Beneath the blackened steel of her cuirass, her chest no longer flared with erratic, warring bursts of raw magic. The Six Shards—five fragments of astral starlight and the dark keystone of the Sovereign Void—had woven into an unbroken circlet of power around her heart. It hummed in a deep, rhythmic cadence, calm and terrible, a living crown anchored into her mortal soul.
Her eyes, when she opened them, held the dual majesty of daybreak and the abyss: silver irises rimmed with rings of void-violet.
Beside her, Malakor’s broad silhouette rose like a shadow given flesh. His dark great sword was sheathed across his back, his armor battered, scorched, and stained with the ichor of broken titans, but his stance was unbroken. One heavy, leather-clad hand rested deliberately on the curve of Aurelia’s hip, his fingers curling possessively into her belt. The dark soul-tether binding them hummed through his touch, a private, scorching current that kept her balanced against the colossal weight of her newfound divinity.
Silence gripped the valley.
Six thousand soldiers, hardened by sieges and frozen marches, stared up at the altar in breathless awe.
High above, the weeping tear that had cleaved the sky was gone. Where the violet rift had bled dark ash, the heavens were now knit whole, bathed in the pale, golden hues of a true sunrise spilling over the jagged ridges of the Iron Crags.
"By the gods of the deep," Lady Vespera whispered, stepping out from the front rank. She sheathed her salt-stained rapier, her knuckles trembling as she dropped to one knee on the black gravel. "The rift... is sealed."
Lord Boros followed, sinking his heavy plate into the dirt, followed by the captains, the archers, and the shock-marines. The synchronized clang of six thousand armored knees striking stone echoed across the basin like a wave breaking against cliffs.
"Hail the Empress of the Veil!" Vespera’s voice rang out across the frozen tundra.
"Hail!" roared six thousand throats, a sound that shook the very foundations of the defile.
Aurelia looked down upon the kneeling host, her breath misting lightly in the morning air. There was no vanity in her chest, only the ruthless clarity of an empress who knew the cost of every drop of blood spilled to reach this threshold.
"Stand," Aurelia commanded, her voice amplified by the Six Shards, ringing with quiet, absolute authority that lifted the soldiers’ heads. "You knelt when we were hunted across the Ashen Wastes. You bled when we broke the drakes and battered Cedric’s gates. Today, you stand as the vanguard of an unbroken realm."
A roar of fierce, wild pride answered her, swords clashing against iron shields in a thunderous rhythm.
Aurelia stepped back from the altar’s edge. As the shouting echoed across the mountains, Malakor pulled her toward him, turning her slightly so his broad shoulders shielded her from the view of the cheering army below.
His scarred face was inches from hers, his amber eyes burning with a dark, primal heat that made her pulse leap despite the cold.
"Look at you," he murmured, his voice a low, gravelly vibration intended for her alone. He lifted his bare hand, his calloused thumb tracing the line of her cheek, lingering on the soft curve of her swollen lower lip. "A true sovereign. Ruling the ashes, feared by the living, and worshipped by an army of butchers."
"And you, Malakor?" she whispered, her hands sliding up the cold steel of his chestplate, feeling the frantic, possessive thud of his heart beneath the armor. "What are you in this new realm?"
A wolfish, wicked smirk carved his lips as his fingers dug into her waist, pulling her flush against his hips, reminding her with deliberate, agonizing pressure that no crown could ever place her out of his reach.
"I am the blade that carves away anything that threatens you," he growled against her mouth, his breath hot and intoxicating. "And the monster who gets to claim the empress when the war is won."
He sealed the vow with a slow, searing kiss that tasted of iron, victory, and the dangerous, infinite future waiting for them beyond the mountains.
