The detonation of the Herald’s core tore through the valley like the wrath of an unchained sun.
Malakor’s broad, armored back absorbed the brunt of the incandescent shockwave. Even through the steel plates of his harness, Aurelia felt the sickening tremor that rippled through his body as debris and superheated aether slammed into them. His teeth gritted against the agony, a low, guttural snarl vibrating in his throat, but he did not yield an inch. His arms remained locked around her, an unbreakable shield of muscle, bone, and dark fire anchoring her to the shuddering earth.
When the blinding tempest finally subsided into a drifting curtain of violet embers, the silence that followed was suffocating.
Malakor slowly pushed himself upright, his breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. The back of his cloak was burned to tattered ash, his dark plate scorched white at the edges, and fresh crimson trickled from beneath the collar of his gorget. Yet as he looked down at her, his amber-flecked eyes held only the lethal, predatory focus of a guardian whose sole reason for survival stood before him.
"You're in one piece," he rasped, his gloved hand reaching out to cup her cheek, thumb wiping away a streak of ash and blood from her skin.
"Thanks to you," Aurelia whispered, leaning into his calloused touch for a brief, breathless moment. Her body trembled—not with fear, but from the terrifying surge of energy thrumming inside her breastbone.
Where the Herald had stood, only a smoking crater remained in the titan-altar. But the battle was far from over.
The destruction of the sceptre had not closed the tear in the heavens; it had provoked it.
High above, the weeping violet rift convulsed. The jagged edges peeled back like torn flesh, exposing the terrifying vastness of the First Void behind the sky. From the abyssal throat of the rift, a massive, monolithic structure began to descend—a colossal archway carved from petrified black glass, adorned with cyclopean runes that glowed with sickly emerald light.
"The Primordial Crown," Lady Vespera breathed, limping up to the edge of the crater with her rapier drawn, her marine guard fanning out with heavy crossbows aimed at the sky. Her uniform was torn, blood staining her silver shoulder-cords. "The legends of the First Era were true. It's not a tear... it's a doorway."
"It's the gate to the Throne of the First Sovereign," Aurelia said, stepping up onto the shattered altar stone.
The Five Shards within her were no longer singing discordant notes. They had locked together in a terrifying harmony, a thrumming chord of astral power that resonated directly with the descending glass gate. A beam of pure, blinding silver radiance shot upward from Aurelia’s chest, piercing the heavens and striking the keystone of the ancient archway.
The sky screamed.
A gravitational vortex exploded from the contact point, ripping loose stones and weeping ash into a swirling cyclone. Men shouted in terror as the air grew so thin it choked the lungs, the temperature plummeting until frost rimed their eyelashes in heartbeats.
"The gate is pulling the realm into the void!" Boros shouted from the perimeter, his voice nearly drowned out by the roar of tearing reality. "We have to break the link!"
"We can't break it," Aurelia called back, her silver hair whipping wildly in the astral wind, her eyes glowing with pure, terrifying starlight. "If the connection severs now, the rebound will obliterate three provinces. The only way to seal it... is from the threshold itself."
Malakor’s hand snapped around her forearm, his grip bruising in its sudden, violent terror.
"No," he snarled, stepping up beside her, his scarred face inches from her own. The darkness in his gaze flared with wild, desperate fury. "You are not stepping into that abyss alone, Aurelia. I didn't pull you through five shattered kingdoms to watch you throw yourself into the dark."
"I am not going alone, Malakor," she said, her voice dropping into a fierce, breathless cadence that cut through the roaring gale. She reached out, her fingers curling tight into the collar of his scorched cuirass, pulling his mouth down to hers.
The kiss was desperate, wild, and tasted of ash and absolute devotion.
"We go together," she whispered against his lips, her eyes locking onto his with unyielding imperial authority. "You sworn your soul to my crown, warlord. Now we cross the threshold and claim what waits on the other side."
A dark, wolfish grin split Malakor’s bloody lips. The terror in his gaze vanished, replaced by the ruthless certainty that had made him the butcher of nations.
"To the ends of the void, my empress," he answered, his fingers intertwining with hers, their combined magic—starlight and shadow—merging into a single, unbreakable cord.
Together, they leaped into the ascending beam of light, vanishing into the yawning maw of the Primordial Crown as the world below dissolved into blinding white.
