The air in the basin tasted of pulverized bone and spent thunder.
As Aurelia rode through the shattered mouth of the gorge, the full scale of the nightmare unfolded before the Vanguard. The Valley of Wailing Runes was not a battlefield; it was a mass grave turned altar. Thousands of megaliths, jagged and soot-black, jutted from the frost-hardened tundra in spiraling concentric circles. Every stone was scored with ancient, bleeding glyphs that hissed like burning fat as the dark rain touched them.
At the epicenter, atop the newly unearthed titan-throne, the Herald stood motionless.
He was a monument of terrible majesty. His armor seemed woven from dead stars, light bending and dying against the undulating facets of his plate. The fractured sceptre he held thrummed with an erratic, starving pulse, mirroring the agony tearing through Aurelia’s core.
Behind the altar, the rift yawned wider. The violet abyss now stretched from horizon to horizon, weeping cascades of weeping ash and void-fire that pooled in the valleys below.
"Halt the ranks!" Lady Vespera commanded, her horse skittering on the black gravel. "Archers, secure the ridges! Marines, lock pavises at fifty paces!"
"Do not let them advance past the perimeter," Aurelia said, dismounting with fluid grace. Her boots sank into the ash-crusted mud. The moment her feet met the valley floor, the Five Shards inside her chest violently revolted.
A sharp, breathless cry tore from her throat. She stumbled, her vision swimming with blinding flares of starlight and suffocating blackness.
Malakor caught her before she could touch the dirt.
His armored arm locked around her waist, hauling her upright against his chest. The scorching aura of his shadow-fire instantly slammed against her skin, battling the icy discord trying to rip her marrow apart.
"Breathe, Aurelia," he commanded, his voice a low, fierce rasp pressed tight against her ear. "Breathe through the fire. Look at me."
She forced her eyes open, blinking past the silver tears welling along her lashes. Malakor’s face was inches from hers, tight with unvarnished rage and a fierce, suffocating tenderness that made the hair on her arms stand up. His free hand came up, discarding his gauntlet to press the burning, calloused palm of his bare hand directly against the plate covering her sternum.
"Draw it into me," he demanded, his jaw clenching as the veins in his neck went taut. "I told you. You don't bear the weight alone. Let my darkness drink the excess."
"Malakor, it will burn you—"
"Let it burn!" he snarled, his lips crashing down onto hers in a searing, punishing kiss that drowned out the howling winds of the valley.
The moment their mouths met, the connection snapped shut. Aurelia gasped, and the violent surge of aetheric recoil that threatened to rupture her heart poured down the soul-tether into him. Malakor shuddered violently against her, a low groan vibrating deep in his chest as black veins erupted across his neck and jaw. His grip on her hips tightened until the iron of her armor creaked, his knuckles whitening, his body anchoring hers against the howling cosmic tide.
The Shards stabilized. The screaming in her ears dulled to a sharp, predatory hum.
When Malakor pulled back, his amber eyes were flecked with raw silver light, his breathing heavy and ragged. A drop of dark blood dripped from his nostril, but the savage grin carving his mouth was victorious.
"Better," he rasped, wiping the blood away with the back of his hand. "Now we take his head."
Above them, the Herald finally stirred.
The creature raised the fractured sceptre, pointing the blackened iron tip directly at Aurelia. When it spoke, it was not with a voice of vocal cords, but with a psychic detonation that reverberated in the hollows of every skull across the valley.
The vessel has gathered the broken crown, the voice echoed, cold as the void between stars. The flesh is weak. The blood is borrowed. Kneel, daughter of dust, and return what belongs to the First Gods.
Aurelia drew her ancestral blade, silver light roaring along the edge like a caged star finally unleashed. She stepped out from Malakor's embrace, her spine rigid with imperial fury.
"I took these shards from the ashes of your kings and the depths of your seas," Aurelia spoke, her voice amplified by the roaring resonance of the Five Shards, carrying across the entire Vanguard like rolling thunder. "If your dead gods want them back, they can crawl out of their graves and pry them from my cold, dead hands!"
