The grand sanctum of Frost-Spire was an immense cathedral carved from the heart of the fallen comet. High vaulted ribs of translucent, star-streaked black ice rose into an open skylight, through which the bruised belly of the northern tempest roared. The floor was a single, mirror-polished expanse of permafrost, so smooth it reflected the storm clouds above like an inverted abyss.
At the far end of the hall, resting atop a raised dais of jagged glacial monoliths, sat the Pale King: Duke Vane of the fallen Solar Concord.
He wore an imperial cuirass of gilded white enamel, but the man within was a husk. His skin was the color of curdled milk, stretched taut over prominent cheekbones, his hair a thin mane of brittle white frost. Perched atop his brow was the Fifth Shard—the Crown of the Void.
It was not a traditional circlet; it was a cluster of jagged, violet-black crystal spikes that plunged directly into his temples, weeping veins of corrupted dark ether that spiderwebbed across his skull and pulsed with a sickening, necrotic luminescence. In his gauntleted hand, he clutched a great spear forged from forged meteoric iron, its tip dripping with freezing miasma.
Flanking the dais stood twelve hulking Void-Gorged Horrors—former Seraphic commanders who had allowed the shard's corruption to hollow their souls, transforming them into eight-foot abominations of petrified bone, jagged ice-plates, and weeping void-smoke.
The heavy star-iron doors groaned shut behind Aurelia and Malakor with a booming metallic finality that sealed them within the cathedral.
"Usurpers," Vane’s voice croaked, a dry, grating rattle that echoed off the frozen ribs of the ceiling. His milky, pupilless eyes fixed onto Aurelia, his lip curling into a sneer of mad, fanatical contempt. "You butchered my brother at the Sunken Spire. You shattered the holy covenants of the Solar Concord. You dragged your muddy boots across the sacred threshold of Sol-Vaelen. And now you come to my kingdom to beg for death."
"Your kingdom is a graveyard, Vane," Aurelia answered, her clear voice ringing with absolute starlight that cut through the miasma. She took a step forward, her twin star-iron daggers resting lightly in her palms, her eyes blazing sapphire and silver. "And your crown is a stolen fragment of the First Throne. Hand it over, and I will grant you the mercy of a quick grave."
Vane threw his head back, unleashing a high, shrieking laugh that ended in a coughing fit of black blood.
"Mercy? From the witch of the rift?" Vane roared, slamming the butt of his spear against the permafrost dais.
The Crown of the Void flared into an blinding nova of pale-violet light.
"The Void does not beg, woman! It consumes!"
With a deafening bellow, the twelve Void-Gorged Horrors surged down the steps of the dais, their massive ice-crusted halberds swinging with bone-crushing momentum.
"Take the abominations, Aurelia!" Malakor roared, his voice shaking the frost from the ceiling ribs. "The butcher's brother is mine!"
Malakor didn't wait for the monsters to close the distance. He channeled every drop of his abyssal wellspring into his limbs, his body exploding into a roaring inferno of black and crimson ether.
With an earth-shattering leap, he vaulted clean over the heads of the charging horrors, his great sword trailing a blazing arc of dark fire as he descended straight toward the throne.
Vane shrieked, raising his meteoric spear to parry.
The collision of their weapons sounded like a lightning strike inside a sealed tomb.
The kinetic shockwave of Malakor’s descending blow shattered the front three tiers of the glacial dais, sending shards of ice the size of shields flying across the hall. The sheer concussive force forced Vane onto one knee, the stone groaning beneath his boots as Malakor leaned into the bind, his face inches from the Pale King’s.
"You speak of consumption, little duke," Malakor growled, his crimson-flecked eyes burning with feral, lethal madness as his black flames began to melt the gilding on Vane’s armor. "You have never seen a fire that can eat the dark!"
Meanwhile, on the floor of the cathedral, Aurelia met the twelve horrors.
They closed in a circle around her, their massive weapons descending in a coordinated executioner’s strike.
Aurelia didn't dodge. She channeled the three unified shards in her chest, opening her core completely.
"Freeze!" she commanded.
A blinding sphere of absolute zero exploded from her body, expanding outward in a perfect, crystalline dome. The sub-zero pulse struck the horrors mid-swing. Their petrified bone limbs and void-smoke armor instantly locked, their joints seizing under the sudden, violent plunge in temperature.
Before the monsters could shatter their icy cages, Aurelia danced through their frozen ranks.
Her star-iron daggers became twin streaks of azure lightning. With lethal, surgical precision, she severed their necrotic spinal conduits one by one. Every horror she struck did not merely collapse; the celestial starlight in her blades vaporized their corrupted cores, causing their massive bodies to explode into harmless showers of frozen crystal dust.
Six fell in the span of three breaths.
The remaining six broke free of their frost-binds, roaring in fury as they swarmed her flank.
Aurelia parried a sweeping halberd with her right dagger, the force jarring her shoulder, and spun low, slicing through the knee of another. But a third horror brought its massive, spiked fist down in a blind arc, catching her across the shoulder-plate.
The blow knocked her back three paces, her boots skidding across the mirror-ice, her breath catching as pain flared in her collarbone.
At the top of the dais, Malakor felt the impact as if it had struck his own flesh.
His head snapped toward her, his eyes widening in savage, protective fury.
"Aurelia!"
A roar of primal, terrifying wrath ripped from Malakor’s chest, rattling the very foundations of the comet-spire.
He severed the bind with Vane, driving his armored boot into the Pale King’s chest with enough force to cave in the breastplate and send the screaming duke flying backward into his frozen throne.
Without a backward glance, Malakor vaulted off the dais, hurtling across the hall toward the horrors surrounding his queen, his black greatsword blazing with the fury of an unleashed apocalypse.
