The Isle of Serpents did not rise gently from the ocean; it was a sheer fang of black volcanic glass and basalt, thrust violently into the storm-tossed heavens by some forgotten cataclysm.
High above the foaming surf, perched atop the jagged sea-cliffs of the western headland, stood the Sunken Spire. The colossal fortress was built from cyclopean blocks of deep-sea stone, covered in luminescent green barnacles and pulsing with rhythmic blue arcs of arcane lightning—the unmistakable signature of the Fourth Shard, the Astral Tear.
As the sixty war-galleys of the Vanguard closed to within half a league of the island, the ocean around them began to boil.
Along the jagged shoals of the outer bay, dozens of white-capped whirlpools opened beneath the churning waves, their spinning funnels designed to draw approaching keels onto the submerged reef needles. Atop the sea-cliffs, the battlements of the Sunken Spire bristled with arcane ballistas manned by cloaked figures in indigo-and-silver robes—the fugitive magi of the High Arcana.
"They have primed the tidal mirrors!" Captain Dennis shouted from the helm, pointing up toward the highest parapet, where three colossal concave reflectors of polished silver were angling downward to focus the sun's gathered rays into searing beams of light. "A single sweep will ignite our sails!"
"Keep the galleys in line," Malakor’s voice thundered from the foredeck, unyielding as granite against the gale.
He stood in full war-plate, his crimson-flecked eyes locked on the cliffs. The abyssal fire within his frame flared, turning the sea-spray hitting his armor to hissing steam.
"Aurelia," he rumbled, turning his head slightly toward her, his arm coming up to shield her from a cresting wave that broke over the gunwale. "Can you bridge the shoals?"
Aurelia stood beside him, her midnight hair whipping violently in the sea wind. She raised both hands toward the whirlpool-riddled bay, her silver-and-azure eyes blazing with unbridled celestial fury. The unified core beneath her sternum pulsed with the force of an awakened star, matching the tidal resonance of the Astral Tear above.
"I will give them a road they cannot burn," Aurelia spoke, her voice ringing clear over the crashing surf.
She brought her open palms down toward the boiling water.
A blinding cascade of starlight and glacial frost detonated from her fingertips, plunging straight into the ocean.
The boiling whirlpools were silenced in a heartbeat.
A massive shelf of translucent, diamond-hard glacial ice three hundred paces wide erupted from the surface of the sea, locking the jagged shoals and submerged coral needles beneath twenty feet of impenetrable frost. The ice surged forward like a living avalanche, climbing the base of the black sea-cliffs and freezing into a massive, switchback ramp that rose directly from the ocean to the lower gates of the Sunken Spire.
Above, the High Arcana turned their tidal mirrors downward, focusing three blinding beams of concentrated solar fire upon the glacial ramp. The superheated light seared the surface, but Aurelia’s frost—fed directly by two unified celestial shards—was an absolute cold that defied natural physics. The beams merely skated across the mirror-like ice, refracting into harmless rainbows that illuminated the dark sea.
"The ramp is paved!" Aurelia declared, turning to Malakor, her breath pluming white against the salt air, a wild, lethal smile parting her lips.
Malakor’s lips pulled back in a savage, predatory grin. He reached out, his iron gauntlet catching her by the back of the neck, drawing her down into a swift, bruising kiss that tasted of salt, iron, and imminent slaughter.
"Then let us introduce the High Arcana to the lords of the realm," Malakor growled against her mouth.
He drew his great sword, the black runes igniting into a towering inferno of dark ether that lit the stormy sky like a dying star.
The Dread Sovereign’s bronze ram slammed into the newly formed glacial shelf, grounding the flagship securely against the ice.
"Vanguard!" Malakor’s roar shook the cliffs. "Disembark! Storm the ramp!"
Two thousand seasoned spearmen of Val-Roc and eight hundred blood-riders poured over the bulwarks, their boots and iron-shod mounts gripping the frozen surface as they charged up the glacial highway toward the fortress.
Aurelia vaulted from the prow, landing lightly at Malakor’s side upon the ice, her twin star-iron daggers drawn and humming with azure light.
Together, side by side, sovereign and warlord led the charge up the frozen ramp, ascending toward the gates of the Sunken Spire while the sky above crackled with the approaching thunder of their final reckoning.
