Dawn over the Sunken Marches did not arrive with sunlight; it came as a sickly violet haze filtering through the dense, choking wall of the Gloom-Shroud.
Along the edge of the limestone bluffs, the five thousand spears of Val-Roc stood in absolute silence, formed into four massive, wedge-shaped assault cohorts. The breath of men and armored warhorses plumed into the damp morning air, while siege ballistas mounted upon wide timber sledges stood primed with black-iron bolts.
At the very edge of the precipice, overlooking the flooded chasm where ten cubits of black water covered the ancient imperial causeway, stood Aurelia.
She had stripped off her outer furs, wearing only her tailored dragon-scale brigandine and dark leather breeches. Her midnight hair whipped in the rising marsh wind, and the silver runes of the unified core shimmered visibly beneath the skin of her throat and forearms.
Behind her, Malakor mounted his colossal black stallion. Clad in full abyssal war-plate, the runes on his armor burned with a smoldering charcoal haze, his greatsword drawn and resting flat across his pommel. His crimson-flecked gaze was locked entirely on her slender back, fierce and watchful as an eagle guarding its mate.
"The tide is at its peak, Aurelia," Malakor’s deep voice carried over the wind. "Vespera’s vanguard gathers in the drowned reed-beds below."
"Then let them witness the end of their tide," she replied softly.
Aurelia stepped forward, her boots balancing on the very lip of the abyss. She closed her eyes, inhaling the sulfurous, stagnant air, and then plunged her consciousness deep into the merged celestial core nestled against her heart.
The two unified shards did not merely hum; they sang an ancient, primordial chorus of creation and cosmic order.
Aurelia opened her eyes. They blazed with blinding, star-white radiance that pierced the gloom like twin lances of pure starlight. She raised both arms to the sky, then brought them down with devastating grace, thrusting her open palms toward the black waters below.
"From the void you were born, to absolute stillness you return!" she commanded.
Her voice echoed across the bluffs, amplified by the thunder of celestial ether.
A pillar of blinding azure-and-silver light detonated from her palms, striking the surface of the flooded causeway with the kinetic force of a falling meteor.
The Black Mere did not freeze slowly.
It erupted into a cataclysmic, instantaneous freeze that defied the laws of nature. A shockwave of sub-zero ether raced across the water at terrifying speed, flash-freezing the ten cubits of floodwater into an unyielding, three-league-wide highway of dense, cerulean glacial ice. The ancient reeds were petrified into razor-sharp glass; the muddy banks were locked in permafrost.
Beneath the glassy surface of the newly forged ice, dark, serpentine shapes thrashed in sudden, violent panic—Vespera’s venom-drakes, trapped beneath eight feet of solid ice, their snouts frozen mid-hiss, suffocating in their own flooded lair.
Above the ice, the freezing shockwave clashed with the warm, humid air of the Gloom-Shroud. The sudden thermodynamic collapse shattered the spell-forged fog. The sickly grey mist did not disperse; it condensed into a torrential downpour of heavy, harmless snow, revealing the sprawling reed-fortresses and canal-spires of House Mor-Venn two leagues away, laid completely bare beneath the cold morning sky.
Aurelia lowered her arms, her chest heaving, a thin sheen of frost dusting her eyelashes and lips. The strain of freezing an entire marsh basin rattled her conduits, her knees wobbling fractionally.
Before she could take a half-step back, a massive, armored arm swept around her waist.
Malakor leaned down from his saddle, scooping her effortlessly against his flank. With a single, fluid motion, he pulled her up in front of him, settling her securely across the pommel of his war-saddle, her back braced against the solid, burning heat of his breastplate.
"I have you," Malakor growled against her hair, his free hand wrapping firmly around her waist, anchoring her against his unyielding frame. He looked down into her pale, breathless face, his dark eyes ablaze with savage adoration and raw, possessive hunger. "You froze their sea. You broke their shroud. There has never been a queen like you."
Aurelia leaned back against his armored chest, letting his searing heat melt the frost from her lashes. A breathless, lethal smile parted her lips as she looked down at the three leagues of solid ice stretching across the marsh.
"The highway is paved, my lord," she whispered, her voice rough with spent ether. "Ride."
Malakor raised his great sword to the sky, the runes bursting into a roar of black fire that cut through the falling snow.
"Vanguard!" Malakor’s voice thundered across the bluffs, shaking the bedrock. "Forward! Ride across the ice and take the south!"
Five thousand spears roared in response.
The warhorses of Val-Roc leaped down the rocky slopes and hit the ice with thundering iron hooves, the frozen causeway holding firm beneath their weight as the unstoppable host charged into the heart of the Sunken Marches.
