The morning bell of Mor-Thal rang three steady chimes across the frosted valley, signaling the changing of the guard.
Inside the high sanctum, the lingering scent of spent cedar and cedar-oil had faded, replaced by the crisp, biting ozone of newly forged power. The air around Aurelia no longer carried a bitter, defensive chill; it was a serene, crystalline sphere of quiet absolute power. The unified core beneath her sternum pulsed with the steady, measured beat of a calm sea, casting faint silver highlights along the dark waves of her hair.
She stood at the grand oak table of the council chamber, fully clad in her battle-harness of midnight-blue velvet and tailored dragon-scale brigandine. At her hip, her twin frost-daggers hung alongside a new scabbard forged of silver-runed star-iron—a vessel fit to channel the merged celestial shards.
The heavy oak doors parted, and Malakor strode into the room.
He was fully armored in his black imperial plate, the mantle of abyssal wolves draped across his massive shoulders. His dark hair was tied back, his crimson-flecked eyes clear, sharp, and blazing with the predatory focus of a warlord who had tasted total dominion and hungered for the rest of the continent.
He approached the table without speaking, stopping directly behind Aurelia. His large, leather-clad hands came down to rest firmly over her hips, drawing her back against his breastplate with effortless familiarity. He leaned down, pressing his lips to the sensitive curve of her throat, lingering there until she leaned her head against his cheek with a soft, contented sigh.
"You look dangerous today, my queen," Malakor murmured against her skin, his low voice vibrating into her bones. "The star-light suits you. It radiates from your pores like liquid silver."
"And you look like a man preparing to conquer the rest of the world," Aurelia replied, her lips curving into a slow, knowing smile. She reached back, resting her fingers over the back of his hands, feeling the iron strength coiled within his grip. "What did the morning couriers bring?"
Malakor straightened slightly, though his hands remained firmly anchored on her waist. He gestured toward the newly unrolled parchment spanning the width of the table.
It was a topographical survey of the southern lowlands: the Sunken Marches of Mor-Venn.
"Kaelen’s scouts returned from the southern border before dawn," Malakor said, his tone shifting into dark, tactical precision. "The defeat of Cedric and the fall of the Black Citadel did not go unnoticed. The High Matriarch of the Sunken Marches, Lady Vespera of House Mor-Venn, has mobilized her болотные legions."
Aurelia’s eyes narrowed as she studied the map. The Sunken Marches were a treacherous expanse of tidal bogs, submerged ruins, and ancient brackish estuaries that separated the eastern hills from the southern coastline.
"Vespera was the late Baron Thorne's cousin," Aurelia observed, her tone turning to ice. "She controlled the southern smuggling lines that sustained the Solar Concord's remnants after we shattered their capital. She knows we must pass through her waters to reach the southern fleet at Anchorhead."
"She has done more than mobilize," Malakor rumbled, his brow furrowing as he leaned closer to point at the narrow corridor between the Black Mere and the coast. "She has opened the ancient tidal sluice gates. The southern causeway is drowned under ten cubits of brackish floodwater, and her mist-callers have summoned the Gloom-Shroud across the entire basin. Any army that attempts to wade through those marshes will be blind, bogged down, and picked apart by her water-striders and venom-drakes."
"She thinks the water is her shield," Aurelia murmured.
She turned within the circle of Malakor’s arms, facing him fully. Her azure-and-silver eyes met his crimson gaze, crackling with raw, celestial confidence. Her slender hands slid up his breastplate, coming to rest over the steel collar of his armor.
"She forgets that water has an inherent weakness," Aurelia whispered, her voice dropping into a lethal, seductive purr. "It can be turned to stone."
Malakor’s lips pulled back into a wicked, hungry smile. His arms tightened around her waist, lifting her until her boots barely touched the stone floor, his face inches from hers.
"You intend to freeze the entire southern marsh?" he growled, the dark heat in his eyes flaring with untamed desire.
"I froze the Silver Torrent when it was a rushing torrent," Aurelia replied, her breath ghosting hot over his lips. "With the unified core humming in my soul, I could freeze a sea if you asked it of me. But we will not merely freeze it, Malakor. We will freeze their waterways into an iron highway for your heavy cavalry. Five thousand spears will ride across their marshes before their mist-callers can finish a single chant."
Malakor let out a low, appreciative laugh that rumbled like thunder in his chest. He bent his head, crushing his mouth onto hers in a fierce, bruising kiss that stole her breath and reaffirmed the unbreakable bond forged in blood and conquest.
When he finally broke the kiss, his eyes were blazing with black fire.
"Kaelen!" Malakor roared toward the antechamber.
The doors flew open instantly, the general stepping in and snapping a crisp salute. "Sovereign!"
"Break camp in Mor-Thal," Malakor commanded, his hand remaining possessively on the curve of Aurelia’s hip. "Mobilize the five thousand spears and the heavy siege ballistas. We march south on the morrow. Inform Lady Vespera that winter has come for her swamp."
