The heavy ironwood doors of the imperial bedchamber shut with a muffled, resonant thud, cutting off the distant cheers and midnight music of the lower citadel.
Inside, the vast chamber was bathed in the intimate, quiet glow of twin moons spilling across the dark obsidian floor. The hearth burned with slow, aromatic logs of mountain cedar, sending embers swirling up the chimney and filling the room with the scent of pine smoke, warm amber, and crushed cloves.
Seraphina stood by the high balcony, her fingers slowly unhooking the heavy diadem of the Solstice from her auburn curls. She set the crown upon a table carved from polished white marble, letting out a long, shuddering breath that released hours of royal posture and stifling ceremony.
"Heavy lies the head," a low, gravelly baritone teased softly from the shadows.
Kaelen had already shed his ceremonial mantle and the heavy plates of his black adamantine armor. He wore only a loose pair of dark trousers, barefoot against the cold stone, his scarred chest and powerful shoulders catching the silver moonlight. His massive wings were tucked loosely behind him, resting like folded cloaks of midnight feathers.
He closed the distance between them with slow, silent steps, stopping just behind her. His hands rose, his warm, calloused palms resting gently on the bare slope of her shoulders.
The heat of his touch sank through the gossamer silk of her gown, sending an instant, electric shudder cascading down her spine. The bond between them hummed in deep, contented harmony—a private refuge away from the thousands of eyes that had watched them on the dais.
"I spent my entire adult life trying to be invisible, Kaelen," Seraphina murmured, leaning her head back against the broad, warm wall of his chest. Her hands came up to cover his wrists, feeling the steady, rhythmic pulse of his blood beneath her fingertips. "In Chicago, if people looked at me too closely, bad things happened. Lights exploded. Monitors burned out. Now, thousands of immortals look at me like I hold the fate of their universe in my palms."
Kaelen leaned down, burying his face in the crook of her neck, inhaling deeply. His lips brushed the heated skin beneath her pointed ear, his breath hot and ragged against her throat.
"You do hold it," he growled softly, his arms wrapping around her waist, pulling her hips flush against his groin so she could feel the fierce, unyielding heat of his desire. "And not a single soul in that hall doubts that you have the strength to carry it. Did you see them, Seraphina? They didn't just bow out of duty. They bowed out of awe."
"And what about you?" She turned in his arms, tilting her face up to meet his molten silver gaze. Her amber eyes flashed with quiet challenge, though her lips parted in breathless anticipation. "Do you bow to me, High Sovereign?"
A slow, wicked grin touched Kaelen’s lips—a predator thoroughly enchanted by the flame in his grasp.
"I bow to no one, little sun," he purred, lifting her off her feet with effortless strength and carrying her toward the sprawling bed of black velvet and silver furs. "Except when I worship you in the dark."
He laid her down upon the furs, following her down until his muscular frame hovered over hers, caging her between his unyielding arms. His wings spread outward, enclosing them in a velvet tent of living midnight that shut out the moons and the stars, leaving only the silver fire of his eyes and the radiant gold of her Sunblood.
His mouth found hers in a searing, possessive kiss that consumed all lingering doubts. Seraphina’s arms wound around his neck, pulling him closer, her hands tangling in his dark hair as the heat between their bodies erupted into an inferno of breathless hunger and celestial resonance.
Yet even as their bodies moved together in the passionate sanctuary of the night, the faint, icy prickle of warning lingered at the edge of the mate-bond—a phantom chill of shadow-stalkers creeping through the mountain's roots.
