The grand hall of Mor-Thal was vast, draped in heavy tapestries of dyed crimson and silver that told the lineage of house Val-Mora across three centuries. High arched stained-glass windows cast fractured ruby light across polished marble floors, but the opulence was hollow; the room smelled of cold sweat, spilled wine, and impending doom.
At the far end of the hall, seated atop a raised dais in an ivory-inlaid throne, sat Archduke Cedric. He wore an ornate velvet doublet lined with ermine, but his powdered face was slick with perspiration, and his hands shook violently as he clutched a gem-encrusted ceremonial rapier. Flanking him were twelve elite retainers of the Sanguine Guard, their halberds trembling against their breastplates.
The heavy oak doors of the chamber groaned open, rebounding against the stone walls with a deafening crash.
Through the doorway came Malakor and Aurelia.
No guards preceded them. None were needed. Kaelen’s spears held the courtyard and lower stairwells in iron-tight silence. As Malakor walked the length of the hall, the black runes on his armor hummed with abyssal heat, melting the frost that clung to his boots and leaving dark, smoking prints along the pristine marble.
Beside him, Aurelia moved with fluid, regal poise. Her cloak flowed behind her like a trail of winter storm clouds, her twin frost-daggers sheathed at her hips, her azure eyes sharp and devoid of mercy.
"Halt!" Cedric choked out, rising unsteadily from his throne, his voice cracking beneath the vaulted ceiling. "I am a sovereign lord of the Solar Concord! You have no right—no imperial decree—to trespass upon my ancestral seat! We offered you terms! We offered you silver and grain!"
"You offered crumbs to an empire, Cedric," Aurelia answered, her clear voice cutting through the stillness like a diamond blade. "You believed yourself safe behind frozen rivers and stone walls, plotting to bleed our supply lines while bowing in secret to the remnants of the Solar Concord."
Cedric sneered, though the terror in his eyes betrayed him. "You are barbarians from the wastes! Usurpers who stole Sol-Vaelen! Cut them down!" he shrieked to his guards. "Cut them down, and I will grant you estates in the high valleys!"
The twelve guards glanced at one another, then raised their halberds with desperate bellows, charging down the steps of the dais.
Aurelia did not draw steel. She simply lifted one delicate hand.
A blizzard of concentrated ether exploded from her palm. The temperature in the hall plummeted instantly, breath freezing in throats before screams could escape. A wave of glacial frost surged across the floor, catching the guards mid-stride. Before their boots could complete another step, ice climbed their legs, their torsos, their armor, encasing all twelve men into solid, glittering statues of crystalline blue.
Silence fell, absolute and suffocating, broken only by the clatter of Cedric’s rapier slipping from his numb fingers to bounce down the marble steps.
Malakor ascended the dais with slow, deliberate steps. Each movement of his armored frame was heavy with the promise of slaughter. He reached the throne, towering over the cowering Archduke like an ancient god of judgment.
With one hand, Malakor seized Cedric by the ermine collar of his doublet, hauling him off his feet until the nobleman's trembling face was level with his own.
"You sent your emissary with severed terms," Malakor said, his voice dangerously low, a dark rumble that shook Cedric to his marrow. "You thought our mercy was negotiable."
"Mercy—lord, please—" Cedric gasped, clawing weakly at the iron vambrace choking the life from him. "I will swear fealty! The gold of Val-Mora is yours! The granaries, the eastern passes—"
"Fealty is given before the gates fall, not after," Malakor growled.
He drove the pommel of his great sword into Cedric’s ribs with bone-cracking force, dropping the broken lord onto his knees before the ivory throne. Before Cedric could scramble away, Malakor stepped onto his right hand, shattering the delicate bones under the weight of his armored boot. Cedric cried out in agony, collapsing against the stone.
Malakor turned his back on the fallen lord and extended his hand toward Aurelia.
She ascended the dais, her steps light upon the ice-slicked marble. When she reached him, Malakor wrapped an arm securely around her waist, pulling her against his side with fierce possessiveness. His crimson-flecked eyes locked onto hers, dark with triumph and a raw, untamed heat.
"This seat is too soft for what we build," Malakor murmured against her cheek, his free hand lightly tilting her chin upward. "Val-Mora is ours. The eastern gateway is shattered."
Aurelia looked down at Cedric, then back into Malakor’s dark gaze. Her fingers traced the hardened line of his jaw, lingering over his lips, which were parted and hot against her fingertips.
"Strip him of his titles and send him in chains to the dungeons of Sol-Vaelen," Aurelia said calmly, her eyes flashing with cold authority. "Let the realm see what happens to lords who dare defy the Vanguard."
Malakor’s lips curled into a wicked, hungry smile. He bent his head, kissing her deeply before the fallen court, his tongue tasting hers with fierce ownership that made her knees weaken despite the cold around them. When he finally broke the kiss, his eyes were blazing with dark fire.
"Kaelen!" Malakor roared into the vaulted hall without breaking his gaze from Aurelia. "Hang our banner from the highest spire. Val-Mora has fallen."
