The bells of Mount Dread tolled not in alarm, but in deep, triumphant cadence that shook the snow from the highest obsidian pinnacles.
Three days had passed since the slaughter in the Sunken Forge. In that time, the miraculous stabilization of the mountain's core had rippled across the Seven Spheres. The rifts along the borders of the mortal realm had shrunk to hairline scars, and for the first time in five thousand years, the permanent blizzard encasing the Citadel had parted, bathing the black spires in the twin light of the silver and crimson moons.
Inside the Grand Hall, the aristocratic court stood assembled in strict hierarchical formation, thousands of high-fae warlords, dusk-sorceresses, and shadow-sentinels packing the tiered balconies.
There was no mocking sneer from Malakor tonight. The disgraced lord knelt among the lowest rank of the western tier, his eyes downcast, his pride broken beneath the sovereign memory of Kaelen's dark-matter gravity.
At the summit of the dais stood two thrones where only one had ever rested.
Beside the ancestral seat of obsidian and dragon-bone stood a newly forged throne wrought of radiant sunstone crystal and polished white gold, its armrests etched with the flaming solar crest of Caelum.
When the massive double doors of the hall swung inward, the breath caught in every throat.
Seraphina ascended the central runner with effortless, regal grace.
She wore a ceremonial gown of midnight-violet silk overlaid with gossamer chains of woven starlight, the neckline plunging tastefully to reveal the radiant golden crescent mark pulsing at the base of her throat. At her hips rested her twin sunstone daggers, sheathed in white dragon-leather. She had rejected court veils and frail coronets; behind her, her twenty-foot wings of crystallized solar fire arched proudly, casting a warm, celestial aura that chased every lingering shadow from the hall.
At the base of the dais, Kaelen waited.
The High Sovereign was clad in regal ceremonial armor of midnight-black adamantine, his dark-matter wings flared wide in a magnificent, protective canopy behind him. His jaw was cleanly shaven, his dark hair brushed back, the silver streak gleaming brightly in the hall's dual illumination. When his molten silver eyes met her amber gaze, the bond between them sang with intoxicating, unyielding certainty.
He extended his bare, scarred hand.
Seraphina placed her palm in his without a second's hesitation, their fingers locking together in a familiar, electric grip that set their blood humming with shared warmth.
Kaelen led her up the marble steps until they stood side by side before the dual thrones, facing the kneeling assembly of Mount Dread.
Lady Vespera, High Inquisitor of the Archives, approached with solemn reverence, carrying a velvet cushion upon which rested the Diadem of the Solstice—an ancient crown forged from braided obsidian and raw solar amber, lost to the realm since the Fall of Caelum.
Kaelen took the crown. He turned to Seraphina, his expression softening into an expression of raw, open devotion that silenced every noble in the room.
"Long has this court ruled in cold isolation," Kaelen’s deep, sovereign baritone echoed off the high vaulted ceilings, reverberating into the bedrock of the mountain. "Tonight, the night claims its dawn. Tonight, the Seven Spheres will know that House Vance and the Sunblood stand undivided."
Gently, with hands that had slain hundreds of monsters yet touched her as though she were sacred glass, Kaelen set the diadem upon her auburn hair.
As the amber crystal touched her brow, a brilliant, synchronized pulse of golden and violet light exploded outward from the dais, bathing every corner of the Citadel in radiant warmth. The ancient runes of Mount Dread chimed in harmonic unison, officially recognizing the coronation of its High Queen.
"Bow to your Queen!" Kaelen commanded, drawing Gloom-Weaver and planting its point into the stone as he bowed his head to her.
Across the sprawling hall, thousands of proud immortals sank to both knees in unison, their voices rising in a single, thundering chorus that shook the heavens:
"Hail Queen Seraphina! Hail the Sovereign of Dawn!"
Seraphina turned to look at Kaelen, her heart swelling with fierce, untamed power. She squeezed his hand, a slow, dangerous smile curving her lips.
Yet far to the north, beyond the jagged peaks and frozen wastes of the outer rim, a distant shadow stirred in the deep void. A new horn blew across the rifts—the horn of the High Emperor of the Ashen Maw, signaling that the war for the Seven Spheres had only just begun.
