The descent into the mountain’s subterranean core was a corridor of screaming steel and blinding fire.
Beyond the shattered bronze gates lay the Sunken Forge—an immense circular cavern miles wide, where ancient volcanic rivers of white-hot magma converged around a suspended, multi-ringed celestial dynamo. This was the beating heart of Mount Dread, the prime engine anchoring the Veil between the Night Court and mortal reality.
Now, the sacred chamber crawled with hundreds of Ashen Maw abominations. Rusted chains thicker than castle pillars had been anchored into the engine’s outer gyroscopes, siphoning its vital ethereal resonance into glowing, corrupted obsidian cisterns.
"Clear the platforms!" Kaelen’s sovereign roar reverberated above the roar of the magma falls.
He plummeted from the entry precipice like an executioner’s blade. Gloom-Weaver sang with deafening dark-matter fury, carving a ten-foot trench of shattered rock and bisected corpses as he landed on the central gantry. A pair of nine-foot spiked brutes lunged at his flank with serrated halberds, but Kaelen didn't even turn. With a savage backhand flick of his eighty-foot shadow-wings, a blast of concussive gravity crushed their ribcages, launching their broken bodies into the churning molten lake below.
Seraphina dropped directly at his back, landing with cat-like grace upon the narrow metal catwalk.
The heat of the magma was stifling to normal lungs, but to her Sunblood, it was pure fuel. The golden starlight of her wings flared into an incandescent halo forty feet across, illuminating the hideous faces of the horde below.
"Kaelen! The secondary anchor!" she shouted over the clash of weapons, pointing toward a fractured pylon where three dark sorcerers were driving iron spikes into the engine’s core stabilizer. "If that gyroscope collapses, the shockwave will rip the Veil wide open across three mortal states!"
"Go!" Kaelen snarled, spinning as his broadsword parried a brutal blow from Vorgath the Flayed’s acid-dripping cleaver. The kinetic impact tore a shockwave across the gantry, showering sparks into the gloom. Kaelen’s silver eyes flashed with bloodthirsty arrogance as he locked blades with the Maw warlord. "I have this insect. Burn their ritual to ash!"
Seraphina vaulted into the air, her golden wings beating with ferocious speed.
Arrows tipped with weeping black poison whistled past her cheeks, but she dodged with fluid, lethal agility. She dove straight toward the secondary pylon, drawing her sunstone daggers from her belt. Channeling every ounce of the primal fire running through her veins, she converted her blades into two six-foot lances of superheated solar plasma.
She landed between the three sorcerers in a devastating ground-slam that shattered the iron plating beneath their boots.
A circular shockwave of pure thermonuclear energy detonated outward. The three sorcerers shrieked as the holy light dissolved their rotting flesh into vapor, the corrupted iron spikes melting into harmless slag.
Across the cavern, Vorgath bellowed in fury as his ritual fell apart. With desperate savagery, the warlord swung his cleaver in a wide, decapitating arc aimed at Kaelen’s throat.
Kaelen didn't duck.
He caught the rusted blade with his bare left gauntlet, dragon-steel grinding against the cursed iron. A cruel, terrifying smile curved his lips as he stepped inside Vorgath’s reach.
"You dared threaten my Queen," Kaelen growled, his deep voice dropping into the icy register of an apex god.
With a sickening crunch of fracturing armor and bone, Kaelen drove Gloom-Weaver straight through Vorgath’s chest, lifting the massive warlord off the platform with one arm and pinning him against the burning engine housing. Black, corrosive blood hissed against the blade.
Kaelen leaned close to the dying monster’s ear, his silver eyes cold as the void. "Tell the Void-Mother that House Vance has reclaimed the dawn."
With a twist of his blade, he cleaved Vorgath in two, kicking the carcass into the magma abyss below.
The remaining Ashen Maw raiders broke, scattering in wild panic into the dark tunnels of the lower mountain.
Breathing heavily, Kaelen turned to look across the glowing cavern. Through the haze of smoke and drifting embers, Seraphina stood atop the purified pylon, her golden wings beating with radiant grace, her amber eyes burning as they locked onto his.
The bond thrummed with overwhelming, victorious resonance. They had survived the siege of the Forge—but above them, the great engine groaned, its ancient rings stalling into cold, terrifying silence.
