With the Emerald Heart of Nidhogg pulsing revitalization through every deck and bulkhead, the armada entered slipstream at maximum thrust.
Seven million light-years burned away behind them in a wake of golden and violet light.
When the two hundred star-dreadnoughts decelerated back into real-space, the cosmos outside the three-story diamond viewport of the Sol-Invictus was a realm of horrifying, silent desolation.
Before them drifted the Necropolis of Shifting Bones.
It was not a star system or a planetary body.
It was an endless, floating graveyard spanning twelve million leagues across—a massive Sargasso of petrified skeletal remains from billions of colossal, prehistoric leviathans, cosmic drakes, and forgotten void-gods.
Ribcages the size of mountain ranges interlocked with cracked skulls whose empty eye sockets spanned continents, drifting in a perpetual, agonizing ballet of necrotic gravity.
A sickly, luminescent violet mist—the Miasma of Malakor—clung to every bone, dripping with caustic spiritual rot.
Deep within the center of this colossal charnel-house, anchored to the petrified ribcage of a primordial world-serpent, rested the Throne of the Broken Skull.
Upon it sat the sixth horror: Malakor-Null, the Corpse-King of the Void.
On the bridge of the flagship, the tactical consoles hissed as long-range scanners registered zero biological life, yet an overwhelming, suffocating presence of necrotic mass.
"The entire bone-field is saturated with autonomous necrotic reanimation," General Aurelius reported, his voice flat with grim shock.
"The moment our sensors pinged the perimeter, millions of skeletal fragments began coalescing. They are forming an impenetrable, self-assembling bone-cage around the entire sector."
"He's not just using the bones as physical armor," Seraphina said, stepping up to the forward rail.
Her Astral Empress Armor gleamed, its white-gold radiance reflecting against the diamond glass.
Her golden crescent mark burned at the base of her throat with sharp, diagnostic urgency.
"The miasma is an etheric pathogen. It feeds on cellular death and converts kinetic energy into necrotic decay. If our fleet fires standard plasma volleys, the heat will only accelerate the rot, giving Malakor-Null more biological fuel to reconstitute himself."
"Then we don't feed him rot," Kaelen Vance murmured, stepping up directly behind her.
His large, scarred hands settled possessively over the curves of her hips, drawing her back against his broad chest.
The heat of his body was an immediate, intoxicating contrast to the icy, suffocating chill of the graveyard outside.
He rested his chin lightly upon the crown of her head, his breath warm and steady against her neck, sending a delicious, grounding shiver down her spine.
His molten silver eyes burned with lethal, predatory focus as he stared into the heart of the necropolis.
"Malakor was once a renegade warlord of the First Night Court who sold his soul to the Void-Mother ten millennia ago," Kaelen growled softly into her ear, his deep baritone vibrating through her very marrow.
"He thinks his necromancy can withstand my shadow-fire. But he forgets that the Night does not merely rot corpses, little sun. The Night commands the silence of their true passing."
Seraphina tilted her head back against his shoulder, meeting his silver gaze with a confident, breathless smile.
"And the Sun provides the fire of their pyre."
"Exactly," Kaelen purred huskily, his arm tightening around her waist as he turned her within his grasp.
His gaze darkened with that familiar, fierce hunger that always made her pulse hammer against her ribs.
He leaned down, capturing her mouth in a slow, deep, devastatingly possessive kiss that tasted of dark wine, ozone, and unyielding promise.
His lips were hot and demanding, chasing away the phantom chill of the charnel-house until she was clinging to his lapels, breathless and trembling.
When they finally broke apart, Kaelen's eyes blazed with lethal purpose.
He released her waist only to draw Gloom-Weaver, the blade crackling with cold violet lightning.
"General Aurelius," Kaelen barked, his voice ringing across the bridge with absolute sovereign command.
"Form the dreadnoughts into a broad crescent! Overcharge the spinal lances with the Emerald Heart’s purification frequency! We do not burn the bone-cage—we purge the spiritual rot anchoring its joints!"
"Purge frequencies locked!" Aurelius roared.
"The Queen and I will breach the central ribcage and confront Malakor directly," Kaelen added, looking down at Seraphina with a wicked, breathtaking smirk.
"Ready to bury an old ghost, my love?"
Seraphina smiled, her golden wings of starlight erupting from her back in a blaze of glory.
"Let's put him to rest, Vance."
