The integration of the Hearth-Core of Ares into the auxiliary engine matrices of the Sol-Invictus was completed in thirty-six hours of frantic precision.
Down in the primary engineering deck, the grapefruit-sized sphere of neutron matter was lowered into the central fusion cradle.
When the magnetic dampers disengaged, a deep, resonant crimson pulse thrummed through every steel bulkhead and orichalcum conduit of the five-mile flagship.
The shield emitters flared with a dense, impenetrable crimson-gold aura, and the spinal plasma lances registered four times their previous destructive yield.
With their defenses bolstered against the crushing radiation of the intergalactic void, the two hundred star-dreadnoughts of the armada re-formed into a wedge and engaged their calibrated fold-drives.
They broke through the outer perimeter of the Crimson Veil of Ares, leaving the burning graveyard of dead suns behind them.
Beyond the veil lay the true abyss: the Outer Rift of Nihil.
Here, three million light-years past the boundaries of charted space, the cosmic medium underwent a terrifying transformation.
Space itself was no longer an empty, velvet vacuum.
It was a turbulent, semi-crystallized ocean of liquid temporal currents and frozen chronal dust, glowing with an eerie, phosphorescent teal hue.
Drifting through the viewport were vast fields of "chronal ice"—glaciers of crystallized time spanning entire light-years, inside of which the ghosts of shattered ancient starships hung perpetually frozen in the exact millisecond of their explosion.
On the central bridge of the Sol-Invictus, the chronometers began to spin erratically.
"Sub-light temporal shear detected," the navigational officer warned, his voice tight with tension as his consoles flickered with teal static.
"Time dilation across the outer hull is fluctuating between point-eight and four times standard baseline. The ships at the starboard flank are experiencing hours while our port flank experiences seconds!"
"Engage the Hearth-Core's chronal anchor field," Seraphina ordered smoothly from the central dais.
She stood at the forward rail, her Astral Empress Armor casting a calm, warm luminescence across the darkened bridge.
Her golden crescent mark burned brightly at the base of her throat, acting as an etheric lighthouse against the temporal tides.
Her Chicago trauma instincts categorized the threat instantly.
"We are entering an environment of chronal necrosis. The fabric of time here is dying, coagulating into scar tissue. If we lose fleet cohesion, our ships will be severed across different centuries."
"Anchor field engaged," Aurelius barked from below.
A wave of crimson heat from the Hearth-Core radiated outward, snapping the fleet back into unified temporal synchronization.
A warm, heavy presence stepped up directly behind Seraphina.
Kaelen’s hands slid over the curves of her hips, his fingers digging lightly into the midnight velvet of her cloak before pulling her flush against his broad chest.
His dark-matter wings were tucked tight beneath his mantle, but his body heat was a scorching, intoxicating furnace against the phantom chill creeping through the diamond-glass viewport.
His molten silver eyes looked out over the frozen sea of chronal glaciers, dark with predatory focus.
"Morvath’s territory," Kaelen rumbled huskily into her ear, his breath stirring her dark curls and sending a pleasant shiver racing down her spine.
"Ancient records of the Night Court called this region the Stillness of Eternity. Morvath doesn't merely kill his enemies, little sun. He traps them in an infinite loop of their final agony, feeding upon the temporal paradox."
Seraphina tilted her head back against his shoulder, her amber eyes meeting his silver gaze with unwavering defiance.
"He hasn't faced a Sunblood and a Void Sovereign working in tandem, Kaelen. His ice will melt just like Vorgon’s iron."
Kaelen’s lips curved into that wicked, dangerous smirk she loved so dearly.
He bent his head, capturing her mouth in a slow, possessive kiss right there on the command bridge.
His lips were hot, demanding, tasting of smoke and dark starlight, chasing away the paralyzing cold of the chronal void until her breath hitched in her throat.
"You are my fire, Seraphina," he growled against her lips, his fingers tightening possessively at her waist.
"And I am your shield. Let the Weaver of Frozen Time spin his threads. We will burn his tapestry to ash."
Before Seraphina could answer, a massive klaxon chimed across the bridge.
Ahead of the fleet, the chronal glaciers parted.
Hovering in the center of a swirling vortex of liquid nitrogen and frozen chronal threads was the third nightmare of the Nine:
The Citadel of the Frozen Loom.
