The expedition to the center of the continent was not an army on the march; it was a sacred pilgrimage of the realm's founding bloodlines.
Only the innermost circle accompanied the King and Queen: Alpha Conlan, representing the ancient elder wolves of the Timber; Lady Talia and Commander Varis, leading a select guard of twelve veteran Void-dancers; and young Alpha Vane, bearing the ancestral banner of the reconciled South.
They did not march on foot through the thawing valleys.
High above the clouds, Cinder and the ancient Abyssal Drake flew in tight, protective formation, their colossal wings beating in slow, rhythmic cadence against the thin mountain air.
Secured within an insulated, enclosed traveling pavilion of thick bull-hide and down pelts strapped to Cinder’s broad shoulders, Lyra held young Kaelen warm against the sub-zero draft. Gideon sat beside her, never letting his hand leave the hilt of his claymore, his amber eyes scanning the endless sea of white peaks below.
Their destination was a place forgotten by mortal maps:
The Spine of the World—a colossal, razor-sharp caldera of black obsidian rising three leagues above the central plains, where the northern mountains converged with the southern plateaus.
It was here, within the extinct volcanic throat of Mount Anvil-Crest, that the entrance to the Primordial Forge lay hidden.
When the two drakes banked through the freezing mist of the crater rim, landing upon a vast, circular terrace of fused volcanic basalt, the air did not smell of snow or mountain pine.
It smelled of raw, molten iron, elder honey, and the faint, unmistakable scent of ancient starlight.
At the center of the basalt caldera was an opening eighty paces wide—not a jagged fissure, but a perfectly circular, descending spiral staircase carved directly from a solid vein of iridescent star-iron that burrowed vertically down into the incandescent depths of the planet’s mantle.
Gideon dismounted first, lifting Lyra and Kaelen down into the sheltered alcove beneath Cinder’s wing.
"Leave the guard on the rim, Conlan," Gideon ordered quietly, turning to his uncle. "The pressure below will crush mortal bone. Only those who carry the covenant blood can walk the anvil."
Conlan nodded solemnly, resting his massive paws on his staff. "We hold the crater, pup. The ancestors walk with you."
Gideon strapped Kaelen securely against his massive chest in a sling of prime wolf-pelt and supple leather, wrapping his own heavy woolen mantle wide around both of them to shield his son from the subterranean draft. He drew his primary star-iron claymore, taking Lyra’s hand in his left.
Together, the King, the Queen, and the Keystone took their first step down the iron stairs into the deep.
The descent took them through seven leagues of solid tectonic bedrock.
With every thousand paces, the temperature rose, but it was not the suffocating, necrotic heat of the southern trenches. It was a rich, life-giving warmth—the ancient, elemental furnace that kept the soil fertile and the oceans flowing.
At the bottom of the spiral, the iron stairs opened into a subterranean vault that defied mortal comprehension.
The Primordial Forge.
It was an immense spherical chamber five leagues across, hollowed from the living diamond-crust of the earth's core.
Suspended at the exact geometric center of the sphere was the World-Heart: a colossal, crystalline sphere of liquid amber magma and swirling violet starlight three hundred paces wide, rotating slowly within a cage of eight interlocking, colossal rings of pure meteoric iron.
From the surface of the World-Heart, two massive conduits of raw power extended outward:
One conduit of molten, golden magma ran north, feeding the geothermal arteries of the Timber and the mountain peaks.
The other conduit of pure, silvery celestial starlight ran south, anchoring the oceanic tides and the cosmic veil of the upper sky.
Both conduits were vibrating erratically, thin spiderwebs of black, ungrounded static crackling along their surfaces where the centuries of war had strained their harmonic balance.
In the center of the iron bridge leading to the World-Heart stood the Anvil of the First King: a massive block of uncarved, primordial star-iron resting upon an altar of solid volcanic glass.
Upon the altar were carved two handprints:
One of a slender, five-fingered human sovereign.
One of a massive, clawed alpha beast.
And between the two handprints, a small, circular hollow the size of an infant's palm.
Lyra walked to the altar, her breath catching as the True Loom within her core resonated with the celestial conduit in a harmonic chime that filled the vast diamond vault with pure, ringing music.
"The altar was never meant for sacrifice, Gideon," Lyra whispered, her eyes shining with tears of ancient revelation.
"It was meant for communion."
Gideon stepped up beside her, his large frame standing immovable against the roaring brilliance of the World-Heart. He unclasped the leather sling, gently lifting young Kaelen into his arms.
The five-month-old babe was wide awake.
His dual-colored eyes—one molten gold, one brilliant violet starlight—glowed with an ancient, serene intelligence as he looked at the rotating sphere of magma and light before him. He did not cry. He reached his tiny, chubby hands toward the altar, babbling with a soft, joyful sound that echoed across the diamond walls like bells.
Gideon looked at Lyra, his amber eyes burning with an unshakeable, eternal pride.
"Together, Queen of mine," Gideon rumbled, his voice thick with devotion.
"Together," Lyra whispered.
Gideon placed his massive, scarred right hand into the beast-print on the altar.
Lyra placed her slender left hand into the sovereign-print.
And between their joined fingers, they guided Kaelen’s tiny, soft palm down into the central hollow of the stone.
The Primordial Forge awoke.
