The days following their conversation at the café were quieter than Sophie expected. There was no sudden rush of grand declarations or impulsive gestures. Instead, it was in the little things - the way their casual chats felt less forced, the way their silences were more comfortable. There was an unspoken understanding between them now, a fragile but growing connection.
The weekend arrived, and Sophie found herself standing at the edge of the estate's sprawling grounds, her eyes scanning the horizon. She was alone - Ethan had disappeared into the estate's lavish maze of corridors, no doubt caught up in some social obligation. Sophie didn't mind. She had grown used to the solitude, even welcomed it at times.
But as she stood there, her mind wandered back to the gallery, to the café, to that conversation. Ethan had promised there would be no more games, no more pretending. But did that mean they could finally move beyond the walls they'd built? Sophie wasn't sure, but for the first time, she felt the possibility of something different. Something real.
Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of footsteps approaching, and she turned to find Ethan walking toward her, his hands shoved casually into the pockets of his coat.
"You look like you're deep in thought," he said, his voice warm with that familiar tone she had come to recognize.
Sophie smiled, though it was faint. "Just thinking about everything."
"About us?" he asked, his expression unreadable, but she could hear the quiet hope in his voice.
Sophie met his gaze, her heart racing in her chest. She nodded slowly. "About us," she confirmed.
Ethan closed the distance between them, his eyes searching hers. "Sophie... I don't expect you to have all the answers right now, but I want you to know something. I meant what I said before. I care about you. I want to be real with you. And I want to try."
Sophie's breath caught in her throat, the vulnerability in his voice disarming her. She had never expected him to be so open, so... sincere.
"I don't know what's going to happen," Sophie said softly, her voice shaking just a little. "But I think... I think I'm willing to try too. I don't want to push you away anymore."
Ethan smiled, a genuine, soft smile, and reached out to gently take her hand. "We don't have to have it all figured out today," he said. "But I promise I'll be here. No more games. No more running."
Sophie squeezed his hand, feeling a rush of relief wash over her. Maybe they hadn't figured it all out yet, but for the first time, she felt the possibility of something real between them - something worth fighting for.
