The sound of rain pattered softly against the windows of Sophie's modest flat as she sorted through her notes. Her final art project was due in just a few weeks, and every moment counted. She pushed her glasses up the bridge of her nose and leaned closer to her sketchbook, her pencil moving furiously to refine the details of her composition.
Her phone buzzed on the edge of her desk. Glancing at the screen, she sighed. Her mother's name flashed across the display, accompanied by a picture from their last family outing. Knowing she couldn't ignore it, Sophie picked up.
"Hi, Mum," she said, trying to keep the exhaustion from her voice.
"Sophie, darling! Are you busy?" her mother asked, her tone cheery yet laced with something Sophie couldn't quite place.
"A little," she admitted. "Is everything okay?"
There was a brief pause on the other end. Then, her mother's voice came through, hesitant but firm. "We need to talk. It's about… an arrangement your father and I have been discussing."
Sophie's heart sank. Her parents were traditional in many ways, often making decisions with little regard for how she might feel about them. "What kind of arrangement?" she asked warily.
"It's… well, it's a marriage arrangement," her mother said quickly, as if rushing through the words would make them easier to digest. "With a family we've known for years. Their son, Ethan Blake, is a fine young man - "
"Ethan Blake?" Sophie interrupted, sitting up straighter. Memories of the exhibition hall flooded back - his piercing blue eyes, his infuriatingly charming grin, and the way he had dismissed her so effortlessly. "You've got to be kidding me."
"I know it's sudden," her mother continued, oblivious to Sophie's rising frustration. "But it's a wonderful opportunity. Their family is highly respected, and your father and I believe it could be… beneficial."
Sophie pinched the bridge of her nose. "Mum, I'm not a bargaining chip for some family alliance. This is ridiculous."
"Darling, just meet him formally," her mother urged. "You might be surprised. Besides, you've already met, haven't you? He mentioned you at dinner last week. Said you're… intriguing."
Sophie's cheeks burned. Of course he would say something like that. She took a deep breath, trying to keep her emotions in check. "Fine," she said at last. "I'll meet him. But only to tell him this arrangement isn't happening."
Her mother's relief was palpable. "Thank you, Sophie. You'll see, it won't be as bad as you think."
Ethan's day had been far less mundane. He lounged in the corner of an upscale bar, a tumbler of whiskey in his hand and the hum of city life beyond the frosted windows. He was used to the games of high society, but even he hadn't anticipated his parents' latest ploy.
"An arranged marriage?" he had scoffed during their family dinner earlier. "What century are we living in?"
His father had been unfazed. "It's a strategic partnership, Ethan. The Carters are a reputable family, and Sophie is…"
"Sophie Carter?" Ethan had cut in, his mind immediately conjuring the image of the fiery art student who had dismissed him so effortlessly at the exhibition. "You're serious?"
"Dead serious," his father replied. "You'll meet her again, and you'll act like the gentleman I raised you to be."
Ethan had downed his drink in one gulp. The idea of being forced into something so archaic didn't sit well with him. But then again, Sophie intrigued him. She wasn't like the women who usually sought his attention. Perhaps this wouldn't be as tedious as he expected.
He smirked to himself, the challenge already taking shape in his mind. "Let's see what you've got, Sophie Carter."

Their first formal meeting was set for the following weekend at a private dinner arranged by their families. Sophie arrived reluctantly, her usual confidence buried beneath layers of frustration and nerves. She wore a simple yet elegant dress, her hair pinned up, and a scowl she didn't bother to hide.
Ethan, on the other hand, seemed completely at ease. He greeted her with his signature grin, his blue eyes alight with amusement. "Sophie. Fancy seeing you again."
"Let's get one thing straight," she said before he could continue. "I'm only here because my parents insisted. This… whatever this is, isn't happening."
Ethan's grin widened. "You're making this far more interesting than I expected."
Sophie glared at him, her resolve hardening. If he thought this was a game, he was sorely mistaken. Little did she know, the night would be just the beginning of a series of events that would tie them together in ways neither could have anticipated.
