He barely had time to process the revelation before a flashlight beam swept past his hiding spot. Instinct took over. He ducked behind a stack of crates just as an officer stepped outside, scanning the area.
"Hey! Did you hear that?" the officer called to his partner inside.
He held his breath, pressing himself against the cold metal, his pulse hammering in his ears.
"Probably just a rat," the other officer muttered.
The first officer lingered a second longer, then turned back inside. He exhaled slowly, trying to steady himself. He needed a plan, and fast.
His fingers found the phone in his pocket. Another message had appeared on the screen.
"If you want the truth, meet me at the docks. Midnight."
His grip tightened. Someone out there knew what had happened.
And he was running out of time to find out who.
