His heart pounded as he pressed himself against the cab's door, mind racing. If the police were here, did they already know his face? Was there a body inside the warehouse? His body tensed with indecision - should he run or get closer?
The cab driver peered at him through the rearview mirror. "You getting out or what?"
He hesitated, then forced a nod. "Yeah. Just give me a second."
Slowly, he eased the door open and stepped onto the wet pavement. The night smelled of gasoline and rain. He pulled his hood up, keeping his face shadowed as he edged toward the warehouse, careful to stay out of the streetlights.
A low murmur of voices carried from inside. He crept closer, pressing against the cold steel of the warehouse wall. Peering through a grime-coated window, he could barely make out two figures standing over something - a body, motionless on the floor.
His breath caught. Was that his handiwork? Was this his target?
A third figure emerged from the shadows - a woman in a dark suit, her badge catching the flickering light. A detective.
His stomach knotted. If she was here, then this wasn't just any job gone wrong. This was big.
The detective crouched down, studying the body, then stood and barked orders to the officers nearby. He strained to hear her words, but the pounding rain distorted the sound. He needed to get inside, to see for himself. To remember.
A gust of wind sent a loose newspaper skidding across the ground. He caught sight of the headline and felt his blood run cold.
"Prominent Crime Boss Found Dead - Assassin on the Loose."
His fingers clenched into fists. If he was the assassin, then someone had set him up. And if he didn't get to the truth fast, he'd be next.
