Chapter 8: The Setback

The days following their spontaneous swing session were filled with brief, hopeful moments. Leo had continued to join Aura and their friends more often, even participating in the occasional group chat or game night, albeit with his usual hesitancy. There were more moments of quiet laughter, more attempts to share fragments of his life. But every so often, something would shift within him. A cloud would cover his face, and the world would grow heavy once again.

Aura had learned to recognize these shifts. They were subtle at first - like when he suddenly withdrew into himself after a comment was made, or when he stopped responding in their group conversations. She didn't push him; she waited, patient, understanding that healing wasn't a straight path. Sometimes it felt like two steps forward, one step back, but at least Leo was trying.

It was one such evening - one of those moments when the air seemed heavy, the smiles forced, and the laughter just a little too loud - when Leo's mask cracked.

They were at Jake's apartment for a game night. The group had gathered with snacks and drinks scattered across the table, familiar faces all around. The mood was light, the energy a mixture of competition and camaraderie. But as Leo sat at the table, his hand frozen mid-air, a deep breath caught in his chest. Something inside him had snapped, an invisible thread pulled too tight.

Leo excused himself abruptly, standing up from the table and retreating toward the door. His movements were stiff, mechanical - like he was trapped in a cage that no one else could see. Aura immediately stood, a concerned frown creasing her brow.

"Leo?" she called, her voice quiet but firm. He didn't stop. His footsteps quickened, and before anyone could react, he was gone.

Outside, the cool night air felt like a slap against his skin. Leo stood at the edge of the porch, staring out into the dark street, trying to steady his breath. His hands trembled slightly, his mind racing with thoughts that were impossible to stop. The game night had started off fine. For a moment, he had felt? okay. But then the laughter, the voices, the sense of being seen had overwhelmed him.

He had retreated before anyone could see the cracks forming. The part of him that wanted to connect, to be normal, had been consumed by the suffocating weight of anxiety. The fear of being exposed, of being too much for them, had taken over.

He felt as though he were drowning. Every conversation, every look, every smile felt like a tight rope around his neck, pulling him further away from the surface.

His phone buzzed in his pocket, snapping him out of his spiraling thoughts. It was Aura.

"Leo, please talk to me. Come back inside."

Leo stood there, gripping the phone tightly, his chest heaving with the urge to say something, to explain, to beg for understanding. But all he could feel was this overwhelming sense of inadequacy - this fear that no one could truly understand what it was like to live with the weight he carried.

Meanwhile, inside, the room had fallen into an awkward silence. Everyone glanced at each other, unsure of what to do. Aura, though, had already made up her mind. She turned to the group, her expression determined.

"Stay here. I'll talk to him," she said, her voice steady.

Her friends nodded, all too familiar with Leo's moments of retreat, but no one could truly understand the magnitude of what was happening beneath the surface.

Aura stepped outside, the cool air hitting her like a wall. She found Leo standing at the edge of the driveway, his back to her, his shoulders tense. She took a slow step forward, choosing her words carefully.

"Leo," she said softly, her voice gentle but firm, "you don't have to hide."

He didn't turn around. The silence stretched, thick and heavy, and for a moment, Aura thought he might walk away from her completely. But then, slowly, he exhaled - a long, shaky breath.

"I don't know how to do this," Leo said, his voice cracked, as though the weight of his words was too much to bear.

Aura stepped closer, careful not to crowd him, giving him the space he needed. "Do what?"

"Be normal." Leo's voice faltered. "I try. I try so hard, but it's like I'm walking around with this? this hole inside me, and no matter what I do, it's always there. And I don't know how to fill it. I don't even know if I can anymore."

Aura's heart twisted in her chest. She took another step forward, her voice steady and comforting.

"You don't have to fill it, Leo. You don't have to be perfect. You just need to be you."

Leo shook his head, his hand running through his hair. "But I don't even know who I am anymore. I don't know how to be this person. The person I used to be? He's gone. He died the day everything fell apart. And all that's left is this... this shell."

Aura felt a lump form in her throat, but she pushed it down. She couldn't cry, not now. He needed her strength, not her tears. She stepped closer, offering him her presence without pushing.

"Leo, I get it," she said, her voice soft but unwavering. "You've been through something no one should have to endure. And it feels like it's always going to be this way, like it's never going to get better. But that's not the truth. You're still here. You're still fighting."

"I don't know how to fight anymore," he whispered.

Aura took a deep breath, her heart aching for him. "You don't have to fight alone. We're all here for you. You have a family, Leo. And we're not going anywhere."

Leo finally turned to face her, his eyes shadowed with pain, but beneath it, there was something else. Something raw and vulnerable, like he was allowing her to see the parts of him he had kept hidden for so long.

"I'm scared," Leo admitted, his voice barely audible. "I'm scared I'll never get better. That I'll always be like this - broken."

Aura reached out slowly, placing a gentle hand on his arm. "It's okay to be scared. But you don't have to face it alone. We'll take it one step at a time, okay? No pressure. Just one small step."

Leo looked down at her hand, his chest rising and falling with shallow breaths. After a long moment, he nodded.

"Okay," he whispered.

The night ended with Leo sitting quietly on the porch with Aura, both of them not speaking, but feeling the weight of the unspoken understanding that hung between them. Leo had retreated once more, but this time, he had allowed someone in. He had let Aura see his pain, and that was something he hadn't done in a long time.

There was still a long way to go, but Aura knew that tonight had marked a shift. It wasn't about erasing the pain, but acknowledging it. And that, in itself, was a victory.

But the road ahead wasn't going to be easy. Leo had shown her his fear, and the fear of losing himself was a powerful thing. They had crossed a threshold, but the real battle, the hardest part, was yet to come.

And Aura was ready to stand by him, every step of the way.
