Chapter 1 - The Girl the Sea Returned
The sea had always been both a mystery and a mother to Mara.
No one in Wrenhaven knew where she came from - only that she was found one fog-heavy dawn, wrapped in a torn blanket, her cries rising above the tide like a lost gull's call. The fisherman who found her said the ocean itself had carried her ashore.
Nineteen years later, the whispers hadn't faded.
"She belongs to the water," the dockhands would say. "You can see it in her eyes - grey as a brewing storm."
Mara worked at the harbor inn, polishing boots, serving stew, and watching ships vanish into the horizon. Her hands knew salt and wood better than softness. Her only comfort came in the hush before dawn, when the sea was still and she could almost hear it breathe.
Then, one morning, the harbor bells tolled three times - slow and uncertain. The Tempest's Pride had returned.
Its captain, Elias Dorne, was the sort of man people spoke about in lowered voices. Too young for his reputation, too proud to be ordinary. Some said he could smell a lie; others swore storms obeyed him. He'd been gone for months on a voyage no sailor expected him to survive.
When Mara saw him stride across the pier, rain-slicked and silent, she noticed something the others didn't - his hands trembled. A man like Elias Dorne wasn't supposed to tremble.
That was the first moment their worlds began to tilt toward each other.
