The call to prayer echoed softly through the crimson sky of Kaduna as the sun dipped behind the horizon, casting long golden shadows across the quiet neighborhood of Unguwan Sarki. The Bellos' mansion stood proud beneath the evening sky - rose-gold walls catching the dying sun. Zainab Musa sat on the low veranda wall of her family compound, legs tucked beneath her modest gown, sipping kunu gingerly as the day surrendered to evening.
Her house sat directly beside the Bellos' mansion, separated only by a light metal fence - ornate but see-through. From her perch, she could glimpse parts of their compound clearly: the driveway, the garden path, the grand entrance. Not everything was visible, but enough to feel the pulse of their world.
She heard them before she saw them, the convoy of black jeeps rolling in like a desert wind. Four cars, tinted, humming with the quiet authority of money. Her heart skipped. Only one family carried that kind of thunder when they arrived.
The Bellos were back.
Inside the compound, the house was ready. Clean rugs rolled across the marble floors, hibiscus flowers arranged along the walkway. Mama Bilkisu had fussed over every detail, down to the fragrance in the hallway diffuser. "My son must smell success," she'd said, smiling at no one in particular.
Inside the lead car, Aliyu Bello leaned back in his seat, sunglasses still on despite the fading light. His return had been long overdue. Eight years abroad, managing companies, building empires, dodging family WhatsApp groups… and now, here he was. Back to roots that didn't feel quite like soil anymore.
The gates creaked open.
The convoy rolled in - Aliyu's car first, followed by the others carrying his friends and cousins who had gone to pick him up from the airport. Laughter and music spilled faintly from the windows, the kind of reunion energy that only long-distance returns could summon.
Zainab's eyes followed the movement, kunu forgotten in her hand. The moment felt suspended.
The car door opened.
Aliyu stepped out.
Tall, effortlessly regal, dressed in a deep navy babbar riga trimmed with silver. The gold of his wristwatch caught the fading light. A quiet storm in motion. He paused at the entrance of his compound, glanced around as if reacquainting himself with the soil of his origins.
Their eyes met - briefly.
Aliyu gave a polite smile. The kind strangers give when unsure if you're someone they should remember. Zainab lowered her gaze with the grace taught to her by her mother. But something inside her stirred, quietly and without permission.
Then the gate closed.
The front door burst open.
"Wallahi! He's not fat!" shouted a voice.
It was Aminu, Aliyu's cousin from his mother's side, sprinting barefoot across the compound like a small hurricane. His mismatched slippers flopped wildly behind him - reckless, a livewire who knew exactly how to charm his way into trouble.
Behind him came Maryam, their niece from Katsina who had lived with the Bellos for years. Graceful, quick-witted, and poised, she adjusted her scarf and tucked her notebook under her arm. She always seemed like she'd stepped out of a northern romance film. Her crush on Aliyu wasn't news to anyone except Aliyu himself.
"Don't run like that, Aminu!" she hissed, cheeks pink. "You'll embarrass us."
"You're already blushing," he teased.
"Aliyu! Billionaire man! You still have neck - thank God," Aminu shouted.
Aliyu laughed and opened his arms, catching Aminu in a hug. "I missed you, Aminun da gaske," he said, ruffling the boy's grown-out curls. "You've grown. And you still owe me an apology for that fake birthday cake you baked me eight years ago."
"It was innovative!" Aminu insisted.
Aliyu laughed. Maryam stood quietly to the side, offering a soft "Welcome home, Aliyu." Her voice barely carried, but he gave her a smile, courteous, not knowing.
Their mother, Mama Bilkisu, emerged next, adjusting her scarf with practiced elegance. She was Shuwa Arab, her lineage tracing back to Sudan. Her fair complexion and refined features carried the grace of her heritage, and her presence always felt like a gentle command.
"Aliyu, do you still eat tuwo, or are you now too sophisticated for your mother's hand?" she teased.
Behind her was Sadiq, Aliyu's younger brother, always a bit quieter, slightly more stern, and Aisha, the youngest sibling, who immediately started documenting the reunion on her phone.
Inside the living room, under a wide ceiling fan, the reunion unfurled like an old film reel.
Alhaji Bello stood beside his younger brother, Uncle Umar, a retired customs officer and father to Mustapha, Aliyu's cousin from the paternal side. The Bellos hailed from Adamawa State - land of beauty, known for its stunning landscapes, rich culture, and people whose warmth was matched only by their elegance.
Mustapha had joined the family business early and was known for blending northern hospitality with sharp business instincts.
"Aliyu, my boy," Mustapha said, slapping his back. "Welcome to reality. We've kept the empire warm for you."
"I see you haven't aged a day," Aliyu replied. "Still fighting with Excel sheets and your temper?"
Laughter erupted. Mama Bilkisu watched them all, her eyes lingering on Aliyu.
"Tomorrow morning," she whispered to her husband. "You will tell him. Before the office calls start coming."
Alhaji Bello nodded solemnly.
