Whispers Across Time
Chapter 2 - Surviving the Firsts
"Your Unbirthday - One Year in Heaven"
Dear Baby Aria,
A year. Somehow, we've survived a year without you - though sometimes we still don't know how. People told us the pain would get easier with time, but they were wrong. It hasn't gotten easier; we've only gotten better at carrying the weight of it.
Every day since we said goodbye, we've thought of you. Every moment, we've wondered who you'd be if you were here. This past year has been filled with "firsts" but not the kind any parents dream about. Instead of first steps, we count the days since we last held you. Instead of your first giggle, there's a silence so heavy it swallows us whole. Instead of first teeth, first words, and messy first birthdays, there are quiet rooms, empty arms, and hearts that will never be the same.
We miss what we never got to have - the sleepless nights spent rocking you, the milestones we should have celebrated, the little things that parents often take for granted. We long for the sound of your cries in the dark, the warmth of your tiny body curled against ours, and the laughter that should have filled these walls.
This year, we celebrated your "unbirthday" - the day you should have turned one. We released a balloon into the sky, watching it drift higher and higher until we couldn't see it anymore. As it disappeared, we whispered our love into the wind and hoped somehow you could feel it. We can't help but imagine what it would have been like: frosting on your cheeks, tiny fists smashing into cake, candles glowing in front of your big, bright eyes. It should have been noisy and joyful and perfect. Instead, it was quiet. Too quiet.
Mother's Day was especially hard. People have said things that cut deeply - that we're not "real parents" because you never took a breath outside of me. But we know the truth, baby girl. We are your parents. You lived, you were loved, and you'll always be ours. No one can take that away.
Father's Day wasn't any easier. Your daddy had dreamed of holding you in his arms, showing you off to the world, being the one to make you laugh. That day, instead of celebrating, he sat quietly, holding onto memories that were never made. We should have been taking pictures, capturing a father's first moments with his daughter, but there were no photos, no laughter, no new memories - only the weight of everything we lost.
In October, we lit a candle for you - just like we will every year - joining thousands of others who have lost their babies far too soon. One tiny flame for you, another for your little sibling, and another for every child whose name is whispered in tears. The glow was soft and quiet, but it carried all the love in the world.
We've survived these "firsts," though we carry the ache of everything we've missed and everything we'll never have. And even though this world continues to spin without you, we refuse to let your memory fade. We speak your name. We share your story. We carry you with us always.
You were, and you will always be, the brightest part of us.
With all our love,
Mommy & Daddy
