PART 9 - "Delivery Room Drama"
One week before my due date, I had everything lined up.
The nursery glowed in soft pinks and creams.
Her name - Nova Reign - already monogrammed on silk blankets and gold-plated pacifiers.
I had a birthing playlist curated, robe steamed, and my custom delivery gown packed.
No hospital-grade drab mess.
This was about to be a luxury labor.
And Devon?
He was on alert - car already gassed, go-bag in the trunk, my favorite snacks tucked inside his coat pocket just in case we had to rush.
He kissed my belly every morning. Whispered to Nova at night.
We were ready.
Or so we thought.
Scene: The Hospital - 3:47 AM
It started slow.
Mild contractions, back pain, nothing I couldn't handle.
Until suddenly, my water broke in the walk-in closet while I was choosing between my Gucci slides and my YSL furry slippers.
I cursed, gripped the dresser, then screamed for Devon like he just missed the game-winning shot.
We raced to the hospital.
The valet knew us by now.
But something strange was already brewing when we arrived - a nurse at the front desk looking a little too smug.
Scene: Triage Tension
As they wheeled me into the delivery suite, I clocked the nurse badge:
Lisa.
Lisa?!
Oh yes. The same Lisa from the office.
The same Lisa who used to "accidentally" spill her pen across Devon's desk and arch her back like she had scoliosis.
Now she was standing at the foot of my hospital bed?
"Oh hey!" she said, lips glossy, ponytail too tight. "Didn't know it was you on the schedule tonight."
I gripped the bedrails and inhaled slow.
My contraction monitor beeped faster than my patience.
Devon leaned close to me and whispered, "You want me to request a nurse switch?"
I looked dead at Lisa, then smiled. "No. I want her to watch me become everything she'll never be."
Scene: Labor Kicks In
Pain came in waves.
Strong, hot, splitting.
But I breathed.
I gripped Devon's hand.
And I cursed out every ex, every hater, every jealous coworker who ever doubted me.
Lisa tried to play her little games - stalling ice chips, forgetting pillows, talking to Devon just a little too long.
Until I barked, mid-contraction,
"If you don't bring me that damn heating pad, I'll deliver this baby standing up and stomp you on the way down."
She flinched.
Devon smirked.
Another nurse appeared like magic.
Scene: The Delivery
It was time.
The doctor came in. Lights dimmed. The room felt like a portal opening.
I pushed.
Sweat dripping. Voice cracking. Legs shaking.
Devon never left my side. His lips pressed to my temple, his words the only sound I could hear.
"You're doing it, baby. She's almost here. You got this. You've always had this."
And then -
One final push.
A cry.
A scream.
A heartbeat that didn't belong to me…
but carried all of me.
Nova Reign was born at 9:28 AM.
6 pounds, 14 ounces.
Full head of hair.
A cry that stopped every nurse in their tracks.
Devon cried.
I did too.
But even in that moment - someone snapped a picture.
And it wasn't our family photographer.
It was Lisa.
Scene: Postpartum Power
I was still in the bed, Nova in my arms, when Devon showed me the email.
Lisa had tried to "leak" a photo of our baby to a gossip blog.
Said she could "confirm the new heir of Devon Banks' empire."
Trying to turn our joy into her scoop.
Before HR could even get involved, Devon sent one message to the hospital board.
Three hours later?
Lisa was escorted out.
Stripped of her badge, her access, her attempt at clout.
I sat in my bed like a queen on her throne, crown slightly tilted, baby against my chest.
Scene: Final Moments
Nova's eyes blinked open - soft brown like mine, with flecks of Devon's gold.
He leaned in close, whispered against my ear:
"Everything we went through… all of it was for this moment. You made me a father. You gave me a home."
I kissed him.
"I gave you an heir. Now let's build the empire."
