PART 26 - "The Watchers in the Walls"
Scene: A New Kind of Trouble
Tuesday came like a silent storm.
The building was quiet - but the eyes weren't.
I felt them. Behind monitors. Through cracked blinds. Around every corner of the office where I used to walk freely, now trailed by curiosity and malice.
Jasmine had gone quiet. Too quiet.
And that meant she was planning something.
Scene: The Email That Shook the Floor
At 10:12 a.m., an anonymous email was sent to HR and CC'd to all department heads.
Subject:
"Questionable Conduct Between Manager and Employee"
Attached:
Screenshots.
Me and Elias leaving the office together.
A fuzzy photo of him kissing my cheek in the breakroom.
One of us in his car… laughing.
No context. No timestamps. Just curated chaos.
HR scheduled a "discretionary meeting" with me at 2:30.
Devon texted:
"You good? You need me to step in?"
I didn't reply.
Scene: The Breakroom Breakdown
I pushed open the breakroom door and found Jasmine leaning against the counter, sipping iced coffee like a villain in a Netflix original.
"You really should log out of shared computers," she said sweetly.
"People dig up the wildest things when you don't clear your tabs."
I stepped closer.
"You want Elias that bad?" I asked calmly.
Her eyes gleamed.
"I want you gone."
Scene: Elias Finds Out
That evening, Elias showed up again.
"You're being investigated?" he asked, his voice low, jaw tight.
I nodded, arms crossed. "They think our after-hours behavior is unprofessional."
He pulled me into a corner, his lips brushing against my temple.
"Let me handle it. I'll put in a formal request to be moved to another department - off record. I'm not about to lose you."
I looked up at him, heart clenching.
"Do you really think they'll stop coming for me?"
He smirked.
"No. But I'm here now. And they've got no idea how far I'll go to protect you."
Scene: The Meeting
2:30 hit like a gavel.
I walked into HR dressed like a boss - fitted emerald pantsuit, red lip, and stilettos sharp enough to cut through every lie they'd stacked against me.
They questioned my relationship with Elias.
I answered with facts, grace, and a printed copy of the Company Handbook highlighting the clause on consensual relationships between employees of separate departments.
Then I slid them my own evidence.
Jasmine's deleted IG story.
Her fake emails from the shared computer log.
A full list of past complaints against her.
"Y'all investigating the wrong woman," I said, standing tall.
Scene: Power Move
Before the week was over, Jasmine was put on probation.
I was offered the opportunity to lead a new regional project.
And Elias?
He kissed me in the stairwell and whispered,
"Let them watch. I'm not hiding you anymore."
