PART 22 - "Crash the Wedding, Break the Bride"
Scene: The Morning of the Wedding
The bridal suite smelled like white roses, vanilla, and nerves.
My girls surrounded me - those who stayed loyal through it all. No snakes. No fakes. Just real women who saw me cry and still fixed my crown.
My makeup was flawless. Skin glowing like caramel dipped in sunlight. Hair in a low bun, curls kissed my neck. That gown? Baby, it hugged my curves like it had a crush on me.
"Are you ready?" my best friend whispered.
I smiled.
"Ready to choose me - and if he shows up right, him too."
Scene: The Ceremony
The garden glistened under the gold-dusted sky.
Devon stood at the altar in a black velvet tuxedo, beard freshly lined, nerves visible in the twitch of his hand. The air smelled of jasmine and Tom Ford Noir Extreme - that cologne that made my mama once say, "Oop, if I were 20 years younger..."
The music swelled.
All eyes turned as I walked the aisle, veil trailing, Nova riding on a little white wagon filled with petals, her curls bouncing with every tiny giggle.
Devon's eyes filled with tears.
I could feel it - we were almost there.
Almost.
Scene: The Interruption
"WAIT!"
Gasps. Cameras lowered.
Even the doves in the trees paused.
A woman pushed past the crowd - tall, red lips, hair slicked back like a villain in a telenovela.
She strutted down the aisle in heels and hatred.
"I'm sorry to interrupt," she said sweetly, "but I couldn't let you marry a liar without knowing everything."
Scene: The Bombshell
"Devon," she said, "tell her who I am."
He went pale.
She turned to me.
"I'm not here for clout. I'm here for my son. The one your future husband hasn't seen in two years."
Silence.
You could hear the preacher's heart drop.
"He told me he'd do better. He told me he wanted a future with me until he changed his mind overnight. Then he ghosted. And now he's marrying you? Like he doesn't have a whole child out here wondering where Daddy went?"
Scene: My Breath Stopped
I looked at Devon. My bouquet slipped from my hand.
"Is it true?" I asked, voice shaking. "Do you have a son?"
He didn't speak.
"ANSWER ME!"
He nodded slowly.
"Yes," he said.
"Before you and I ever touched. It was a one-time thing. I didn't know she kept the baby. When I found out… I didn't know how to bring it to you without losing you."
Tears burned.
"So you just pretended he didn't exist?"
He stepped forward.
"I planned to tell you after the wedding. I wanted to do it right. I was wrong. But I didn't abandon him. I send money. I've reached out."
The woman scoffed.
"You send guilt money. You don't call. You don't show up. And she's about to marry a man who lies like it's his second language."
Scene: The Choice
The guests were frozen. The air thick.
I stared at Devon, at the man I loved. The man who held me through contractions. The man who kissed Nova's tiny feet.
But this?
This betrayal… it cut.
I turned to the crowd, lifted my veil, and took the mic from the stunned officiant.
"Today," I said, "was supposed to be about truth. About forever. But I refuse to start forever with another lie."
Gasps.
Devon took a step forward.
"Please…"
I shook my head.
"You should've told me. Before the rings. Before the aisle. Before all of this."
I turned to the little red-lipped villainess.
"I'll handle this like a woman. But you will not ruin me with your drama. Your child deserves answers - but I deserve the truth. And I will not say 'I do' to a man who makes decisions for me."
Scene: The Walkaway
I picked up my train and walked.
Head high.
Heart broken - but not shattered.
Because I remembered who I was before this dress.
Before the ring.
Before Devon.
I was Leprinthinya. And I never needed saving.
