The mountain shook with the sorceress's laughter. It wasn't just sound - it was a blade scraping across stone, sharp and venomous, echoing through the cavern where Elara and Kael stood side by side.
"You think love can save him?" she spat, stepping into the glow of Kael's fire. Her beauty was the kind that cut, brittle and cruel, her obsidian eyes gleaming. "I forged this curse with blood and betrayal. It will not shatter for a mortal girl's foolish heart."
Elara's lungs burned, each breath ragged. Her dress was ripped, her arms and legs stung with shallow cuts, but her hands - shaking, bloodied - clung tightly to Kael's.
He stood half-shifted, body tearing between man and beast. Golden scales tore across his skin, wings spasmed out then snapped back, his jaw stretching into a muzzle before wrenching painfully human again. His roar was agony, a sound caught between a man's scream and a dragon's fury.
"Stay back, Elara!" His voice was broken, jagged. "She'll kill you - "
"I'm not leaving you!" The words ripped from her throat, raw and unshakable.
The sorceress raised her staff. Black fire hissed at its tip, shadows writhing into jagged spears that shot toward them. Kael lunged, shielding Elara with his body. The attack slammed into his scales, searing deep. Smoke rose from the burns as he staggered, teeth clenched against the pain.
Elara's fear twisted into fury. This wasn't just about curses or blood bargains - it was about him. The man who carried centuries of torment, who had every reason to turn cruel but hadn't. The man who had looked at her not as an offering, but as a choice.
She stepped out from behind him.
"Elara!" Kael's voice broke, panic laced in every syllable.
The sorceress sneered. "So the little bride bares her teeth at last. Brave, but pointless. He is mine. The curse is mine. Soon he will tear you apart with his own hands."
"No," Elara said, steady now. Her heart thundered, but her voice was firm, burning with a clarity she hadn't known she had. "He is not your monster. He is not your curse. He is Kael. And he's mine."
Before Kael could stop her, she flung herself forward, caught his face in both hands. His eyes blazed molten gold, his body convulsing under the weight of the magic threatening to tear him in two. He shook violently, caught in the pull of shadow and fire, but she pressed her forehead to his.
"Kael," she whispered, desperate and fierce. "Look at me. Hear me. You are not hers. You are not a curse. You are Kael. And I love you."
The cavern cracked with the sorceress's scream - high, piercing, a sound of glass shattering against the sky. Light burst from where Elara's hands met Kael's skin, a fire not of destruction but of release. White-gold flames roared outward, swallowing the cavern. Kael's roar tore through the air, woven with Elara's cry until they were one sound - agonized, defiant, unbreakable.
The chains of shadow binding him split apart, snapping like brittle iron. The sorceress staggered back, her body fracturing, her scream breaking as the light consumed her. In a rush of ash and fire, she was gone.
Then silence.
Elara collapsed to her knees, her fingers still twisted in Kael's shirt. Terror seized her chest. What if he hadn't survived? What if the curse had burned him away too -
Arms closed around her. Warm. Human. Trembling, but real.
"Elara…" His voice was hoarse, stripped raw, but free of the dragon's growl. She looked up through blurred vision - his skin bare of scales, his golden eyes soft, his face wholly his own. No curse. No monster. Just him.
Tears slid hot down her cheeks. "You're free," she whispered, almost afraid to believe it.
Kael lowered his forehead to hers, his lips brushing hers like a vow. His voice trembled, but his words were steady.
"No, Elara. I'm yours."
