That night, after I left the church, sleep was a stranger. My mind churned in endless circles, weighed down by the heavy truth Father D'Souza had laid before me. The past, the guilt, Stella's ghost - all tangled up in a hopeless knot. I felt like I was drowning, desperate for a lifeline.
And then, in the haze between waking and sleeping, the world around me dissolved.
I found myself standing in a place so dark, it was as if the night had swallowed me whole. The thick, sulfurous air stung my nostrils, burning with the scent of brimstone and ash. The ground beneath my feet cracked open, glowing red-hot with fiery veins that pulsed like the heartbeat of hell itself. Shadows moved with a life of their own, dancing cruelly just beyond the edge of my vision.
From the darkness emerged a figure. Cloaked in tattered black robes, the hood hid everything but the faint glow of molten gold eyes that pierced straight into my soul. The figure's voice rumbled like distant thunder, deep and chilling.
"Steve," it said, "you stand between two worlds - torn by love and guilt, caught in a fire you've ignited. You have disturbed the natural balance."
My heart pounded violently, but I forced myself to speak. "Who are you?"
The figure shifted slightly. "I am the Guide. Neither friend nor foe, but the keeper of the trials. You have been granted a chance, a rare one."
"A chance?" The word churned in my throat, a strange mixture of hope and dread.
"To seek redemption, you must face three trials: Regret, Sacrifice, and Redemption. Only if you succeed in all will you find release from your torment. Fail, and you will remain trapped in this inferno for eternity."
A cold dread gripped my spine.
"Why me?" I demanded, struggling to keep my voice steady. "Why offer me this chance?"
"Because your love was real, and your guilt, genuine. The fire in your heart burns with enough fury to consume hell or light a path to salvation. But the journey is treacherous, and Stella's forgiveness is not a gift freely given."
The Guide lifted an arm, and suddenly the swirling flames encircled me - not the flames of physical fire, but intangible, searing flames that tortured the soul. My very being was torn apart and remade in those flames as I was swept through memories and visions, pain and hope.
When the blaze receded, I stood before a vast wall made entirely of mirrors. Each pane shone with haunting clarity, reflecting moments of my past - some I wished never existed, others I longed to forget completely.
"This is your first trial - the Trial of Regret," the Guide's voice echoed, calm and unyielding. "You must confront the sins you have committed, the pain you caused, and accept each one in full."
My breath caught in my throat. The mirrors shifted.
One showed that rainy night - Stella's terrified eyes, the hardness in my hands as they closed around her throat. The echo of her scream pierced the silence of that moment forever.
Another revealed the nights I betrayed her trust, the lies and cold shoulders, the distance that grew between us like a canyon with no bridge.
More mirrors appeared, each reflecting a different wound I'd inflicted - on her and on myself.
Tears blurred my vision, but I stepped closer. I had to face it. No more hiding.
"Are you ready?" the Guide asked gently.
I swallowed, feeling the weight of a thousand regrets settle on my shoulders.
"I have no choice," I said, "I'm ready."
As I touched the first mirror, the coldness of the glass shocked me, but I was pulled inside - a prisoner of my own past.
