At lunch the next day, Benjamin was quiet. Not withdrawn. Just full.
He watched Donny doodle in his notebook. Saw how Christopher chewed on his straw when nervous. Something inside him stretched, sweet and aching.
Later, under a low-slung tree behind school, Christopher and Benjamin sat side by side. Donny had stayed back to help with clean-up.
Benjamin plucked a leaf and twirled it. "Why do we get scared of tenderness?"
Christopher looked at him. "Because it names us. And we're not always ready."
Benjamin leaned closer. Their shoulders touched. The contact wasn't new, but the intention was.
Then - quietly - Christopher turned his face. Not dramatically. Not movie-scene magic. Just a slow inching of longing.
Benjamin didn't move away.
Their lips brushed. Barely. A hint. A promise. Christopher's hand trembled.
Benjamin pulled back first, eyes wide with wonder. "You trembled."
Christopher smiled. "Because I care."
They laughed, not because it was funny, but because their hearts had too much softness to hold in.
When Donny arrived later, Benjamin greeted him with a smile - not dazzling, not bold, but different. Brimmed with knowing. The kind of smile that hints at deeper beginnings.
And Donny, seeing it, felt something inside him open like morning.
