Lake Elm wasn't part of the original plan. But one Friday afternoon, with no homework and hearts full of summertime daring, they boarded a bus and let themselves wander.
It was Benjamin's idea. "We need something unplanned. Unpredictable. So we remember we're alive."
The lake was quiet, framed by pines and swaying reeds. They kicked off shoes, peeled away socks, waded into water that shimmered like secrets. Donny splashed Christopher. Benjamin floated on his back like a starfish, arms wide.
Then - they weren't alone.
A man appeared, walking a dog. Tall. Salt-and-pepper hair. Vintage sunglasses. A face that made Benjamin momentarily forget how to blink.
The man paused, waved. "Beautiful day, boys."
Christopher nodded politely. Donny smiled shyly. But Benjamin stood taller. "It is. We decided to chase it."
The man laughed - a rich, layered sound. "Best kind of decision."
He walked closer. "I used to do that. Back when being brave was something you had to sneak into your weekend."
Benjamin flushed. "And now?"
"Now I teach younger folks how to be loud without apology."
He winked at Benjamin. "Including those who blush adorably when spoken to."
Benjamin nearly dropped his towel.
When the man left, Christopher nudged Benjamin. "You were flirting."
Benjamin clutched his chest. "He flirted first."
Donny chimed in. "I think he called you adorable."
Benjamin collapsed into the sand with a laugh that carried, bright and wild. "We need to remember this moment forever."
They all agreed. And Lake Elm became legend.
