The Strong Room

They call it the Strong Room - the final stop on the long, winding road of an election.

It is where numbers become decisions. Where ballots are counted, recounted, and signed off. Where dreams hang on ink marks and tally sheets. It's not glamorous. No stage lights. No roaring crowd. Just tables, chairs, forms, and a heavy kind of silence that feels almost sacred.

But what makes this room "strong" isn't just its purpose - it's the people inside it.

At 9:00 a.m., they began to arrive. Representatives from every team, some nervous, others stoic, all holding the weight of their candidates' hopes. These weren't just students - in that room, they were gatekeepers of fairness, guardians of transparency, silent witnesses to democracy at work.

At first, it was quiet.

A polite nod. A clearing of the throat. The scratching of pens on paper. Eyes cautiously scanned one another. Rivals sat shoulder to shoulder, and though the air was thick with unspoken competition, something else began to stir.

By 10:00 a.m., the mood had changed.

Someone joked that the jollof was "more competitive than the election itself." Another passed around snacks in a recycled lunchbox. You see, each representative had been tasked with bringing food for their team - a small gesture, but one that sparked something larger. Small talk led to laughter. Laughter led to stories. Suddenly, it wasn't just Team A vs Team B. It was Michael, Ama, Kwesi, and Yaa - real people with real lives, all brought together by this strange, high-stakes task.

They were still opponents, yes. But in that room, something beautiful bloomed: respect.

They shared frustrations about the long hours, the chaos of campaign season, the tears no one saw. They admitted the stress, the exhaustion, the pressure of getting it all right. But they also found common ground in the passion they carried. Because at the heart of it, each of them wanted what was best - fairness, truth, dignity for the process.

The Strong Room was supposed to be a room of silence and scrutiny.

Instead, it became a space of unexpected unity.

Outside, tensions buzzed. Supporters waited. Results loomed. But inside those four walls, for a moment in time, the room became more than just a place for final collation - it became a symbol of maturity, trust, and what it means to lead with integrity, even behind closed doors.

By the end of the day, they would go their separate ways. Some would taste victory. Others would carry the sting of loss. But all of them would carry something else too - the memory of The Strong Room and the quiet, powerful reminder that even in competition, there is space for connection.
