Chapter 1: The Move

Maricel and her family moved into an old house on the edge of a forest in the town of Dolores, Quezon. They had inherited it long ago from their grandparents but only decided to live there now due to the hardships of life in Manila.

The place was peaceful, the air was cool, and everything seemed perfect for a fresh start. But one day, an old woman from the village approached Maricel while she was sweeping the yard.

"Dear, be careful with that tree," she said, pointing to a large balete tree behind the house. "Someone lives there. Never, ever disturb it."

Maricel just smiled and nodded, not thinking much of it. Probably just another tale from the elders, she thought.
