Nicolette intercepted Gemma outside the teaching library on Thursday.
“I need five minutes.”
Brenda checked the time on her phone.
“Do we get to ask what they're for before surrendering them?”
Nicollette ignored her, but not as comfortably as she once had.
She held a folder against her ribs. No immaculate tablet case today. The corner of the folder had softened where she had been gripping it.
“My father sits on the procurement committee,” she said.
Gemma waited.
“One of the suppliers being reviewed is connected to the clinic network under investigation.”
“Why are you telling me?”
Nicollette looked toward the study room behind them, where other students bent over their screens.
“Because I received a request to describe your presentation. Informally. From someone in the chancellor's office.”
Gemma went cold.
“What did you send?”
“The public slides. Nothing else. There wasn't anything else I had a right to send.”
Brenda's expression lost all humor.
“Did they ask for more?”
“They asked whether you had mentioned an heirloom.” Nicollette swallowed. “You hadn't. So I said no.”
For a moment, the corridor seemed very loud.
Gemma heard a chair scrape, a burst of laughter, the turnstile at the library entrance.
“Will you give the messages to the investigator?” she asked.
Nicollette looked down at the folder.
“I've already contacted the information officer. I wanted you to hear it from me.”
Brenda folded her arms.
“That's a welcome change of delivery method.”
Nicollette accepted the remark without answering.
Gemma studied her face.
“This doesn't mean I trust you with everything.”
“I didn't expect it to.”
“But thank you for bringing it.”
Nicollette nodded once.
“I still think your methods section needs work.”
Gemma surprised herself by smiling.
“Send a specific comment.”

Micah Ashbourne arrived at the restoration site on a motorcycle with a cracked mirror and a helmet he hung from the handlebars as though he expected to leave quickly.
Gemma had agreed to meet him with campus security informed, Malcolm present, and Brenda at her side. They were not sneaking anywhere. Brenda had been emphatic about that.
“We are students,” she had said. “Our survival rate improves around witnesses.”
The ceremonial hall smelled of damp plaster and old timber. Plastic sheeting whispered over stacked furniture. Beyond a temporary barrier, the newly exposed doorway stood in a wall of pale stone.
Celeste met them in a hard hat and work boots.
She greeted Gemma without hesitation.
Gemma was grateful enough that it hurt.
“The room is structurally cleared,” Celeste said. “No equipment is being powered. Stay inside the marked route.”
Micah took off his jacket.
He was the youngest of the brothers, with a quick, restless face and eyes that looked as though sleep had been an optional part of his recent schedule.
“Malcolm,” he said.
“You might have answered your phone.”
“You might have stopped asking which border I was at.”
Brenda glanced at Gemma. “Different family. Familiar operating system.”
Micah laughed.
Malcolm did not.
Inside the chamber, the air was colder.
A row of disconnected outlets ran along one wall. Faint rectangular marks showed where cabinets had stood. The floor sloped toward a drain.
Gemma smelled metal beneath the damp.
Her hands prickled.
Micah handed a sealed document sleeve to Dorian, who had joined them at the entrance.
“A duplicate maintenance ledger. Bought with funds that will make the reimbursement conversation unpleasant.”
“You should have brought it to us sooner,” Dorian said.
“I brought you a supplier name six months ago. The supplier got inspected, emptied its office, and opened under a different name.”
Dorian said nothing.
Celeste pointed to the wall.
“That service conduit appears on the original plan. It disappears from every council copy after 2008.”
Brenda crouched beside it without touching.
Three branching grooves met around a small metal socket.
The center was filled.
Gemma felt her stomach turn.
“That's the arrangement,” she said. “From the clinical images.”
Celeste stepped back and called the evidence technician.
Nobody asked Gemma to put her hand on it.
She noticed that. She would remember it later.

Dr. Saye appeared on a secure video call that evening.
Micah had found her through a former clinic porter and spent weeks persuading her that speaking would not expose her grandchildren. Dorian had arranged protection before asking for testimony.
On the screen, she looked smaller than Gemma had imagined. White hair, a blue cardigan, a water glass held in both hands.
“I signed the false certificate,” she said.
Miriam closed her eyes.
The room went still around the small electronic hum of the connection.
Saye did not ask to be forgiven before continuing.
The chancellor's men had arrived during the attack with orders to secure the infant. The newborn's healing signature had already been recorded. Saye understood what would happen if they took her.
There had been another baby who died that night. A little girl whose mother had been told the truth of her loss, but whose identity record was later misused without her knowledge. Saye substituted the record attached to the Ashbourne infant and concealed the living child's transfer.
“There was a porter I trusted,” she said. “I told him to take her to the old clinic. I knew the night staff. I thought one of them would be there.”
Naomi looked at Thomas.
“I went for Elias's medicine,” she whispered.
The accident of it passed through Gemma like cold water.
Saye had kept a duplicate transfer sheet and a signed account of what she had done. Not to manufacture a future claim, she said. Because one day the child might deserve an explanation she could prove.
The records had been delivered through counsel. The original seals and handwriting were being independently examined.
“Why didn't you come back?” Miriam asked.
Saye's face crumpled.
“At first, because I was afraid. Later, because I had been afraid for so long I began calling it protection.”
Nobody filled the silence for her.
Gemma thought about the woman who had lost the other child. Somewhere, a whole family existed outside this room's relief.
“Her record needs to be restored too,” she said.
Dorian nodded immediately.
Saye bowed her head.
It was the first thing Gemma asked of her birth story.
Chapter Thirteen
A Daughter, Not a Verdict The independent result arrived on a rainy Tuesday.
Gemma heard it in Mercer's office with Naomi on one side of her and Thomas on the other. Miriam and Nathaniel waited in a separate room because Gemma had asked for the answer before the reunion.
The laboratory physician explained the comparisons, the independent checks, the limits of any single historical record.
Then she said the words plainly.
Miriam and Nathaniel Ashbourne were Gemma's biological parents.
For a moment, Gemma felt nothing.
She watched a drop of rain find another on the window and run downward with it.
Then Naomi's hand tightened around hers, and she began to shake.
“All right,” Gemma said.
It was a ridiculous thing to say.
Nobody corrected her.
•••
Miriam entered slowly.
Nathaniel stood behind her, one hand braced against the doorframe.
Gemma had imagined this moment enough times to know that none of the imagined versions was going to help.
Miriam stopped an arm's length away.
“May I hold you?”
Gemma nodded.
Her biological mother smelled faintly of bergamot and hospital soap. Her arms were warm. Her breath broke against Gemma's shoulder.
There was no flood of childhood memory. No sudden replacement of everything she had known. Just a stranger who was not entirely a stranger, grieving into her hair.
Gemma held her back.
When Miriam stepped away, Naomi was still there.
That was what allowed Gemma to keep standing.
Nathaniel touched his daughter's cheek with the backs of two fingers.
“Hello,” he said.
The simplicity undid her more thoroughly than anything else had.
•••
They met the brothers together that evening in the Bennetts' kitchen because Gemma said she could not face another long table.
Malcolm stood when she came in. Dorian looked as though every useful sentence had deserted him. Julian had brought flowers and immediately realized there was nowhere sensible to put them. Micah held a paper bag of pastries.
Elias inspected the offerings.
“Interesting strategy. Most people use food when they want us to like them.”
“Is it working?” Micah asked.
“Preliminary data is promising.”
Gemma laughed, and everyone breathed again.
Malcolm hugged her so carefully that she finally said, “I won't break.”
“I know.”
“You don't look as if you know.”
His laugh was rough.
Dorian apologized for the coldness of their first meeting.
“You were trying to protect your mother,” Gemma said.
“Yes. That doesn't excuse making you feel like evidence.”
She accepted the apology because he had finally named the thing.
Amara arrived with Miriam and Nathaniel. Naomi gave her the vase and asked her to rescue Julian's flowers. It was such an immediate, practical inclusion that Amara blinked twice before taking it.
Later, Gemma found her arranging the stems at the sink.
“You okay?”
Amara looked toward the crowded kitchen.
“I'm trying not to count who looks at whom.”
Gemma leaned beside her.
“I'm trying not to think every question is an exam.”
Amara handed her the scissors.
“Then cut those. We can be useful and emotionally complicated at the same time.”
They worked side by side.

Lucien summoned no one.
He asked to meet Gemma, and she agreed on the condition that Mercer, her father, and Brenda attend.
The Alpha received them in a council room overlooking the town. Traffic moved below the windows. A maintenance worker in a bright vest cleared leaves from a drain while men inside discussed authority.
Brenda noticed the same contrast. Gemma could tell by her face.
Lucien did not offer congratulations.
He offered a chair and a folder.
“Your return has legal consequences,” he said.
“My existence had consequences before you had the paperwork,” Gemma answered.
Thomas shifted beside her. Not to silence her. To sit a little straighter.
Lucien accepted the correction.
He explained the Healer House's suspended charter: sanctuary, independent clinical governance, and the right to petition for a succession hearing when an Alpha endangered the pack's health.
“Recognition of the line restores standing,” he said. “It does not automatically remove me.”
“Who told you it might?”
His eyes lifted to hers.
“People who would benefit from making us believe we must fight each other.”
He opened the folder.
Six months earlier, an audit had suggested that an infant transfer from 2008 had been concealed. Lucien had authorized a quiet inquiry through a small office he believed secure.
He had not told the Ashbournes. He had not known the infant's present identity.
“You thought a child survived,” Gemma said.
“I thought it possible.”
“And you kept it from the people who lost her.”
“I believed a public inquiry would alert whoever falsified the records.”
“Your quiet inquiry alerted someone anyway.”
Lucien looked down at the report.
“Yes.”
It was the first answer he had given without armor.
Mercer asked about the procurement network. The new evidence had led investigators to a shell company supplying regenerative treatments. The treatment chamber Celeste uncovered was an early experimental site. Rook's office had renewed its funding under other names.
“Then suspend him,” Thomas said.
“I have. The warrant applications are before an independent magistrate. He cannot access council systems.”
Brenda leaned forward.
“I assume that's more thorough than the previous version of ‘cannot access.’”
Lucien's mouth tightened.
“It will have to be.”
Gemma looked at the folder containing her name.
“I'm not moving into your compound.”
“I expected that.”
“And nobody uses my clinical work as a condition of recognizing my family.”
“Agreed.”
“I want the medical charter reviewed independently. Not rewritten by the office it was meant to oversee.”
Lucien was quiet for a long time.
Outside, the worker cleared the drain. Water rushed toward it, carrying the leaves away.
“That,” Lucien said finally, “will be considerably less popular.”
“With whom?”
He looked at her then with something like reluctant respect.
“The appropriate question.”
