The air grew heavy with mist as the girl’s voice echoed across the clearing, calling out to her father.
He stood a few paces away, half-concealed by the thickening fog of the Forbidden Forest. His fingers traced the faint, glowing remnants of blue light in his palm. With a single, deliberate motion, he cast the spell forward, watching it drift toward her until it settled against her skin.
"Human, from this moment on, you will remember nothing of what happened here or of meeting me," he murmured into the chill wind.
As the approaching footsteps of the search party drew closer, he allowed his form to dissolve, seamlessly blending into the dense mist and vanishing as though he had never been there at all.
When he materialized back inside the sanctuary of his secluded wooden home, the quiet was absolute. He stepped into the main room, his dark coat shifting slightly with the movement.
"Why did you erase her memory?"
A sharp, melodic voice broke the silence. He didn't flinch. Leaning against the doorframe of the dim hallway was a small fairy-like woman. She wore a fitted, beautifully shimmering satin dress that gleamed softly in the low light—not overly long, just a crisp, elegant knee-length gown suited for movement. Her wings hummed with a faint, iridescent glow as she folded her arms, glaring at him with frustration.
"We could have just killed the human girl," she pressed, her voice dripping with annoyance. "It would have been safer and far more convenient for us. Why keep sparing someone who wanders where she shouldn't?"
He merely stared at her, his expression a mask of cold, unblinking indifference. He gave no answer, walking past her toward the inner room.
As he stepped away, a strange transformation rippled through the space. The small room, the clothes Yumi had left behind, the feminine garments in the closet—they all dissolved into thin air, leaving no trace that a human woman had ever occupied the room. The simple wooden house expanded, its architecture shifting and warping into a grand, shadowy fortress that blended seamlessly back into the dark, untamed heart of the Forbidden Forest.
Days later, the true weight of his burden pressed down upon him.
The clock was ticking. He had only seven days outside the forest before the consequences turned catastrophic: the forest would begin to decay, his own form would destabilize, and chaos, disease, and war would erupt across the entirety of Nythoria.
He had learned a terrifying truth—the legendary Heart of Elarion, the only artifact capable of healing divine curses and restoring balance, was stolen from the Celestine Healers and had somehow been brought directly into Kalayapaan City. To save himself, the forest, and the magical balance of the world, he had no choice but to venture out into the dangerous, bustling streets of the mortals.
Cloaked in shadows, he scanned the city. His primary goal was to observe the Celestine Healers' squad, hoping to gather information on the stolen artifact.
Instead, he found chaos.
Standing near the Eastern Trade Bridge, he watched as several masked figures in black cloaks launched a sudden, violent ambush against the sentinels sent by the healers. Screams filled the air. Panic rippled through the crowd as people scattered in every direction.
Amidst the rushing, terrified throng of bodies, a familiar, faint energetic resonance brushed against his senses.
The human girl whose mind he had once wiped.
Before she even realized the danger, a distortion rippled through the air. In a blink, he teleported instantly, materializing right beside her just as she stumbled backward from the surging crowd. Pushed toward the edge of the bridge where the railing had broken, she flailed in desperation, her hands reaching out blindly for the nearest thing to anchor herself.
Her fingers caught the front of his white cloak.
Before he could overthink it, his reflexes took over. He grabbed her by the waist and pulled her firmly against his chest, shielding her from the rushing wave of panicked citizens. She buried her face tightly against him, eyes shut, trembling in absolute terror.
He didn't react, standing completely still amidst the roaring chaos around them, acting as the eye of the storm. He let her hold on, waiting in silence until the violent rush of the crowd finally subsided.
The moment the immediate danger passed, he loosened his grip and gently stepped back.
Before she could lift her head to fully see him, he turned and dissolved straight into the thick of the surrounding crowd.
In a flash of light, the small fairy appeared hovering right beside his shoulder, grabbing his arm and nagging in an exasperated whisper:
"You saved her again? What is it with that human girl that you keep putting yourself at risk for her? Because of that little distraction, we lost track of the trail!"
Without answering a single word, he looked straight ahead. With a subtle shift of energy, he lifted entirely off the ground, floating silently into the air where no mortal eye could reach. Unseen and unheard, he scanned the entire area from above, searching the crowds for the ones who held the stolen artifact.
