The sun blazed above, only to be blocked out by the tall pine trees. Rays of gold leaked through the branches and leaves. The coyote climbed up the rocky terrain, his paws gripping on the bits of moss and grass. The robins chirps echoed across the forests hallways. The trees whispered with the occasional gust of wind. The forest protected the animals from the arid summer heat, the shades blanketing everything in its cool embrace. The coyote sniffed something in the air.
Fresh meat. Not too far away.
The coyote slinked through the bushes, and saw a cougar up ahead. It was perched on top of a hill, tearing off chunks of a deer carcass. Its mouth and whiskers were stained red, and it had its claws latched onto either side of the deers hide. It had its back turned towards the coyote, so it hadn't noticed him yet.
The coyote snuck through the bushes and shrubs, inching closer to the cat and its kill. The cougar was still busy gnawing through the deers ribcage. The coyotes ears were tucked behind his head. He had to bide his time, otherwise he wasn't going to eat and get killed. The cougar continued eating for a couple more minutes before it turned its head away to lick its paws. The coyote inched a little closer, rustling through the bushes. The cougar didn't notice, still licking its paws. The coyote finally got to the deer carcass and started tearing at the hind leg. The meat tasted gamey, and it suited well for the coyote. He could feel the muscle fibers tearing rather easily, as he continued to amputate the leg with his jaws. He finally broke the leg off, the joints snapping off like twigs.
The cougar quickly turned its head, being alerted by the sound. The two animals eyes locked, and they stared at each other for a while. Then the cougar lunged forward, its snarling mouth filled with dagger-like teeth. The coyote spun around and darted away, the piece of leg still in his mouth. The coyote zig-zagged through the bushes, with the cougar right on its tail. The cat was almost twice the size of the canine. A few times the cougar almost swiped the coyote with its massive paws, but the canine managed to always be one step ahead with its scrawny legs. The coyote continued to flee, with the cougar right on its tracks.
They ran all the way down the slope. Just when the cat was about to catch up to the canine, the coyote made a sharp left turn, causing the cougar to trip over itself. By the time the wild cat got back up on its feet, the coyote was long gone. It had crossed a small stream and darted into the woods on the opposite bank. There it found a safe haven underneath a giant log and began feasting on the deer leg.
