Death sits by the edge of the river, her long black hair flowing in the wind. The moon casts a soft glow onto her face. She sighs, happy with a successful day. No souls refused to cross over. She reaches her hand forward and glides her fingers across the water hiding the entrance to the underworld. She feels a tug in her energy, drawing her somewhere. She follows the pull to a small stone building with Goddess of Death etched into a stone plaque above the door with a large space above it. A young woman is placing flowers on an altar inside. A tear slides down Death's face falling onto the altar as she touches the flowers. No one has ever cared enough to build her a temple before. After all she is just a lower goddess, unnamed.

Over the next year, the young woman leaves Death daily gifts. Death accepts all of them. On the anniversary of the first gift, curiosity gets the best of her. She appears in the temple in front of the young woman as she is leaving the gift.

"I appreciate all the gifts you have left me but may I ask why me and not others?"

"Why not you?"

"I am Death."

"You are so much more than that. The Fates cut the lifeline, you collect those souls and deliver them to their eternal resting place. You keep them from being stuck in between life and the afterlife."

Death smiles a soft smile.

"How could a soul in this life know what I do?"

"I was blessed by the Fates. I speak to those who refuse to cross and help them finish what they need to on this side, then send them to you to go to the other side. They tell me of your kindness toward them. You are greatly misunderstood. You carry such beauty."

Death leaves with a smile on her face, ready to meet the new souls by the river. Several years pass as Death sends the woman souls with unfinished business and the woman continues to give Death flowers, now accompanied by heart shaped stones. One day there is a note left on the altar but none of the usual gifts.

You are too beautiful and too good to remain unnamed. You are the child of Selene, Goddess of the Moon and Night. Therefore I name you Celeste. I hope you accept this gift.

-with all my love

Psyche

"Celeste. I like it."

She smiles and holds the note to her chest. She walks up to Psyche's house. It has been so long since she looked upon the face of her most devoted. She knocks on the door. A soft voice calls out.

"Come in."

Celeste enters and is met by a frail looking woman. Gray hair flowing in curls framing a wrinkled face. Psyche lays in her bed, too weak to stand.

"Celeste. My great love. I knew you'd come. It is my time. I am ready to go with you."

Psyche takes her final breath and her soul leaves her body. Once again, Celeste sees the beautiful young woman she met years ago holding out her hand. A tear slides down her cheek as she takes her hand. The tear lands on their joined hands and the room fills with light.

"Do not worry my love, death is not the end for me, but only the beginning, if you will have me by your side."

Celeste reaches forward and caresses Psyche's face.

"Always."
